Cubase 14 wishlist

  • fix inverted horizontal scrolling on windows (it is the most diabolic thing, most annoying bug any UI ever did. i never smashed keyboards, but due to this i can feel it.)

  • add date-variables to export-filenames (since the queue got introduced it takes doulbe the time for me to export proper named files (24-03-16 TRACK 01 foo bar.wav), than before!..)

  • fix loosing sync in synced-folder-edit (broken for more than a decade, stole hundrets of hours fixing projects)

  • fix loosing tempory off following state when clicking into events

  • fix crashing on multitrack phase-coherent timewarp (bug inroduced in 13)

  • either keep adding fixes to 13 until it is free of bugs or NEVER release 14 - cubase is not sold as a subscription, but it actually it is, because once the new version is out, the previous one is dead. major bugs just never get fixed, but a hell of em get added every new major versionā€¦

No, not at all like ā€˜export audioā€™. Different functions, while yes they both render a file, export audio flattens automation entirely and just spits out a rendered audio file outside of the project.

Render In Place is meant to render out a file (while still in the project, hence the term ā€˜Render In Placeā€™) to save you CPU. You can select things you want to accompany this ā€˜in placeā€™ render like certain types of data and routing. Whatā€™s weird is certain modes will copy over automation data youā€™ve drawn in, while some modes simply elect not to do so. Again I iterate I canā€™t think of a time when I donā€™t want this data carried forward (that is as a composer/sound designer working in 2024 using lots of inserts as well as sends with automations).

Unfortunately I think Steinberg devs arenā€™t focused on this at the moment, new plugins and shiny features are always sexier.

If I owned Steinberg Iā€™d have a Seal Team 6 equivalent of code monkeys to swarm these requests and problems until we have a stable and beautiful Cubase.

One can hope.

I disagree. This is not on my Cubase 14 wishlist. It is on the NOW wishlist.
This is the single most annoying behaviour of Cubase on PC after any form of data or functionality loss.
I am scrolling the wrong way 100% of the time - because of muscle memory - and get disoriented when I am scrolling while zoomed in on details.

Render in Place: as a loop (is this called 2 pass?)

Result would be that any sound that surpasses the part border would be inserted at the beginning.

  • Light theme as an option
  • Bugs free, stable program
  • Easy to read text, 3D GUI.

Aahhā€¦ Yes, I know what render in place is but the way I use it, it kind of does what it says on the tin - I create what is the equivalent of a multitrack tape in old money (so no effects, audio files that go through the channel with inserts and automation intact). I didnā€™t realise it managed to erase automation in other settings - which setting does it lose the automation?

I do agree with your final paragraph - there are still issues in there from years ago which have just been forgotten aboutā€¦

I think if the price of Cubase was $2000 and annual upgrades were $400 with no discounts, and everyone paid these prices now and in the past, you wouldnā€™t need the Navy or Monkeys.

And that sells. ā€œCubase 14ā€¦We Fixed Everythingā€ wouldnā€™t sell.

Unfortunately, prosumers and the market dictate a lower price. Professionals are just along for the ride.

It would for anyone using Cubendo in a professional capacity. Unfortunately that segment is a minority these days Iā€™m afraid.

Sometimes, you can get drivers for your mouse or trackball that allow application-specific behaviours.

We had this exact discussion already in other threads and it always came to the same conclusion: I cannot change the horizontal scrolling behaviour without changing the mouse wheel behaviour everywhere else in Cubase at the same time.
No matter what mouse or software I use. maybe you like to share the specific product that I need to buy in order to ONLY change horizontal scroll mouse-wheel direction in Cubase. I will go and buy it, if it doesnā€™t do what it should I will ask you to pay the bill.

I wish for Cubase to incorporate the functionality of ā€œChunkā€ found in Digital Performer. Having switched from Digital Performer to Cubase 7, I instantly grasped Cubaseā€™s reputation as a superb DAW. However, I was disappointed to find that it lacks this one feature, Chunk.

To put it simply, Chunk is analogous to what Cubase refers to as a project. In Digital Performer, you can create Chunk under what would be considered a project in Cubase. These Chunks can be duplicated, allowing for the creation of multiple Chunks within a single project.

The convenience lies in the ability to nest Chunks within other Chunks. Essentially, this means you can have numerous patterns within one project.

Trying to achieve this in Cubase would require dealing with long bar counts and numerous tracks. With Chunk functionality, however, one can easily circumvent this hassle.

Workflows of different DAWs will always differ.
Have you explored the Arranger Track in Cubase?

Yes, I am familiar with Arranger Tracks.
With Arranger Tracks, you cannot place multiple events overlapped in the same location.
The function called ā€œChunkā€ allows you to place Cubaseā€™s track folders freely anywhere.
And that too, selecting VSTs that are up and running freely.

Do you know about Digital Performerā€™s Chunk, mlib?
If Cubase were equipped with that feature, it would greatly expand its flexibility.

sure! all of those should have been adressed in 10 or so (6?), since i was expecting to upgrade to a working DAW back then. still all those bugs exist in 10, and 11, and 12, and 13, getting company of new bugs YAY!
only the date-variables are a (real needed) feature for a upcoming version.

Clip Launcher aka Session View

Iā€™m actually about a year new to Cubase as an experienced user from other DAWs (namely Logic and Pro Tools). I love Cubase in many ways but thereā€™s a few odd UI things I think could be finessed.

  • Overhaul Mediabay to be cleaner and much less convoluted (while still maintaining its power, it could just use a lift)
  • Overhaul Score Editor - match the look and ease of Dorico? Perhaps introduce a copy/paste or sync functionality between the apps too? But I would be happier with just a nicer and more modern score editor as it is.
  • Ability to easily create exponential/log curves on audio fades, just like you can with automation (yes you can open the fade window, but I think doing it right on the fade as with automation curves is so much slicker and faster)
  • Add Parameter Automation pop-up window - is it just me or is the search function kinda useless? If I have an insert or sends and search for it by name, it never shows up, not sure why that isā€¦
  • Fix all mouse and track pad behavior for navigation and zoom. Pinch to zoom horizontally, pinch with modifier key to zoom vertically. Cubaseā€™s current implementation is wonky at best.
  • Remove strict audio routing for hardware - the current implementation inside studio > audio connections settings makes it impossible to quickly switch your I/O based on your project needs, one such example if you have two compressors which you sometimes wish to use as completely separate mono for different sources, or in dual mono or full stereo (the same two compressors in linked stereo mode). I have a patchbay where I can manually override this, but it would be nice to be able to quickly switch routing in Cubase for A/B purposes, but most of all so you can decide when to use something in mono or stereo and not have it fixed by the program.
  • Minor but I frequently feel like the range tool should be able to do similar things as selection. For one example if I create a range and wish to mute/disable all clips within that range, it will not work, it only works if selected with a lasso/marquee. It also drives me a little crazy when using the range tool to delete automation, it creates new automation pointsā€¦ maybe some people prefer this but I think of range as a selection in that way.

Giving sends the possibility of being delayed and put out of phase! I think it would be an easy fix and it would make a lot of things easier.

Wishful thinking but anyway:

Serious bug polishing of Cubase 13
Unified GUI and color scheme for Steinberg applications and especially stock plugins.
Channel Zone movable between timeline and left or right zone - way more handy.
Channel Setting on selected channel in lower zone as option.
Chord pads with major or minor scale as default.
Chord pads with AV passing chords and 8va or 5th in the bass
Supervision mastering analytics with superimposed channel frequencies.
Handy Roland 707,808,909 presets or kits in GA not just HALion Sonic
Some much needed love for Score Editor or Dorico Elements integration.
