CUBASE 15 No MIDI

Just installed Cubase 15. I am getting no MIDI inpts. I have two keyboards plugged in and recognised in Cubase MIDI Port set up both have a tick in active and in ALL MIDI, but no sound in the project. NO activity in the indicator bar. A fresh project with one VST, Yellow Speaker is active on the channel, All MIDI is selected as input. I do get sound from Audio channels. Any ideas folks?

thank you Z

The post is pretty short on details.

Are you on Windows or Mac? Do you have a Universal Audio interface?

Sorry Win 11 latest.

With what? I looked for Cubase 15 at time of posting, did not find it.

You skipped the second question

“Do you have a Universal Audio interface?”

Hi,

Try to disable the WinRT option in the Studio > Studio Setup > MIDI Ports Setup.

Thank you for trying to help guys. I have a Focusrite 18i20 audio interface. I can also confirm that using a stand alone VST the MIDI works.

I found the culprit! It was the drivers for a bank of three faders I use for CC work that use the generic Arduino Leonardo driver. C15 does not like it. As soon as I removed these faders, Cubase behaved.
I tried searching for the drivers but whoa! it is no simple task. Arduino seems to be some hobbiest kit thing and the language surrounding it’s use is a whole new world of Vulcan to me. I can’t find drivers or any reference to Win11.
Anyways, Arduino=Cubase Bad as far as I can tell. Any suggestions for new fades would be welcome.

Hi,

What do you want to control with the faders, please?

That’s strange. Many of the DIY-ish MIDI controllers out there are based on Arduino.

Glad you found the issue. But also I don’t understand why it would be the issue.

If you have a moment, can you post here with more details? Like what’s the specific controller and driver you used?

Hi,

Oh yes, good question! This is problematic at this moment…

Sorry this MIDI fader bank was purchased on ebay a long time ago. It has no manufacture name even on the instructions! Do know how to find a way to update the driver? I can’t even find a driver.

No my Audio interface is a Focusrite 18i20 3rd gen

What I want to do is control CCs (only). For composing purposes using orchestral stuff. Mostly the usuals. cc1, 7, 11, but other ccs too. So that I can ride faders especially in the Key Editor.
Going slightly off topic Martin, my main keyboard here is a Nord Stage 4, which is a Stage keyboard and not designed for controlling Ccs. However, I have discovered that it does send MIDI CC. So, because I currently have no physical CC faders apart from the one’s on the Stage 4, I am trying to repurpose it.

I don’t use the Synth Section but it does have three decent faders. I have been trying to use these, but have failed. What I am trying to control is MIDI CC as it appears in the Key Editor. My hope would be to be able to assign these Nord controls so that I could allocate them to CCs as they display in the Key Editor, or by some other method.

I have today tried using a Remote in Cubase. Although I have been able to set up three faders, I can find no way of allocating CC’s to these remotes - the remote faders do respond to physical movement of my Nord Faders, (I suppose outputting the Nord CC assignment) but I can find no way of expressly assigning a CC to a Cubase Remote fader.
The windows in Cubase remote dance around and completely confound me. I think I did this once but no more.
In the Functions Browser, there is no sign of MIDI CCs - which is puzzling. I can’t see a way of allocating a CC, although I feel I have doen this in the past. I really do not understand. Also my faders turn blue and once this happens i can’t seem to find a way of turning them red (which I think makes them editable again) so I am continously deleting and creating new faders. This is not intuitive. The whole process is exceedingly strange. I dont even know how many windows there are in the Remote lower pane.
So, I tried to use a Quick control. I can here bring up a window for CC controls, and I can allocate them to a CC value, but I can’t seem to find a way to then get gthe quick control to MIDI learn the fader I want it to respond to.
Not complaining, but just an observation, I spent a lot of time on this, both today and in the past, but I am not really grasping the concepts here, though I do know MIDI, I find it all a bit of a quagmire.

Hi,

If you don’t need motorised, then there are plenty of them on the market.

Thanks. No worries, then. I’ll keep this in mind should I hear of anything similar in the future.

Most Arduino MIDI or HID controller devices don’t need any sort of custom driver in Windows – they are configured to show up as a device of that class, and so just use our MIDI or HID class drivers.

Arduino drivers are generally only required for things like firmware updates.

But it has been some number of years since I last messed around with Arduino projects, so I could be mistaken.

I have never found one without flaws Martin, Some are crazy expensive, most have flakey drivers.

Hi,

Would something like Korg nanoKontrol work for you? Or do you search for something more robust?

Nano is too toyish the faders are too short too 100ml would be good. my criteria is cost about 100-200, could be more, no flakey software or hard cubase set up, three faders, able to use MIDI learn, able to use for riding ccs in MIDI orchestration. Not interested in over complexity. I am cautious about one man industries, would need to know they really, really work

My controller works with Cubase and requires no drivers in case anyone is interested. Nick (Google ExC-3 to find my blog)
