Cubase 15 pro is very very slow and crashing

Installed Cubase 15 Pro on my 2021 M1 MacBook Pro with macOS 26. Cubase is now very very slow and crashing. It is not workable anymore, only waiting and waiting…. Before the update I did not have any problems with Cubase 14 Pro. Anyone the same issues and possible solution? Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forum,

I’m sorry to hear about your bad experience with Cubase 15.

Please, attach the *.ips files, so we can have a look, where does it crash. If you have a description, what did you do before the crash, it’s even better.

Mac: macOS Console utility > Crash Reports (or ~user/Library/Logs/Diagnostic Reports).

Thanks Martin!

I don’t know if I understand you correctly. After the installation I started cubase. After a long waiting time (initializing…) I come in the cubase hub. Then I select ‘ create Empthy project’. After that I press the + sign to add the first instrument track. I select instrument track with Halion as instrument. Then the button add track and then te problem starts…. waiting waiting and waiting. Sometimes it ends in a crash and sometimes after 5 minutes Halion started. But after selecting a synth in Halion it again is showing the rainbow wheel for minutes. Also the complete cubase window is sometimes not refreshing so content is not visible. By hovering with the mouse it step by step sometimes comes back. Conclusion… not workable. This morning I thought ‘do I need a faster laptop?” but 14 pro was working very fast. Also for the first time of my live checking other DAWs… No I am a cubase fan :).

How can I find these files? I am not so deeply into the macOS system. I know how to use the software

Mac: macOS Console utility > Crash Reports (or ~user/Library/Logs/Diagnostic Reports).

This is the location you will find the files. With finder, open the user folder, then open library folder, etc until you’re inside the Diagnostic Reports folder. Look for files with ips extension

Halion is definitely doing some strange things that might be causing cubase to not function correctly. I had a similar experience when loading up Halion sonic 7. When added to a track, load and quit times significantly increase. I removed it and used Komplete Kontrol instead and that stopped the issue.

The other issue I had was when mapping QC in the “Vibrant” instrument (none exist at the moment) that just killed it (really really slow but no crash) on a Mac mini M2 with 16GB ram.

same here! ever since tahoe :frowning:

I tried disabling the GPU remedy, still far from ideal as this mode also makes lists not appear until selecting items on them (ie when going through samples, the list is blank until the mouse is run over what appears to be empty).

It’s so slow and laggy that it’s difficult to even start a new project properly.

Halion 7 instruments even dissapear and have to restart the computer so they show up again (yes I’ve tried refreshing whilst in Cubase but alas only a reboot re shows eg: Studio Strings and other libraries)

I hope a fix is on it’s way soon as Cubase 14 has been smooooooooth on Mac Studio / M1 Max /64gb ram

Same, C15 Pro on Tahoe 26.1 is very slow and laggy on MacBook M1 Pro.

I’m right in mixing and need to force a shutdown again.

It cannot handle VarAudio for instance.

I try to tweak all system and cubase parameters to optimize the set up, but to no real effect.

Need to go back to C14.

Hope you guys at Steinberg can come up with a fix soon.

When I go really low on the monitor settings, things improve.

Graphics performance could be one factor to look at.

This is probably the known issue the Steinberg dev team is already busy working on a fix for.

There seems to be a problem with “hidden” graphical elements of the Cubase UI. When you have a channel settings window open and it gets covered by the timeline window, the UI starts lagging without any CPU overload - just cubase turning choppy and laggy. I’ve had this happen on my M1 Studio and M4 Max running Nuendo (same UI engine).

I’ve also noticed that it happens when you try adding and editing EQ points in the Channel Settings EQ.

The only temporary fix is to 1. put the channel window somewhere it can stay open and at a fixed position and 2. try to minimize having multiple plugin windows at once - until the fix is released.

Problem persists in C13 upwards for everyone using Tahoe 26.1

This really helps. After closing the plugin windows it works normal.

Thanks
