Using clip volume/main fader/plugin gain push output gain of clip beyond 0dbfs and render in place at 32bit float. Normalize gain. Peaks remain hard-clipped.
•Qualifiers:
Rendering 64-bit files works as it should (though with twice the space required).
Rendering 32bf files with the 32-bit float mixer engine enabled works as it should.
•Why it matters to some and not others:
proper gainstaging is obviously vital for deliverables and many non-linear fx. In the post facility I work at, Intermediate files often balloon past 0db to give the mixers -18LUFS uncompressed stems. This has always worked without issue in Cubase 10-13 and other current NLE’s.
The upper event is with 64bit float audio engine and a 32bit float file,
the lower one is with 32bit float audio engine and a 32bit float file.
The waveforms are not identical because I rendered a synth whose settings cause slight deviations. But there is no clipping on either one of them. They both were peaking at 6.7dBFS.
Cannot reproduce it either (C14, Win11). I used a percussive sample, increased event gain so that it clipped +5dbFS, then rendered once with 32bit engine, once with 64bit. The resulting files nulled completely when flipping the polarity on one of them, which of course means both renders are bit-identical.
