Cubase 6.5 / Cubase Artist 6.5 update available

While I of course agree that the financial sum total for both to get to C4 should be the same, I understand that Steinberg has to try and keep their user base intact.

That it is.

That does not preclude us from ASKING that, just like there is a fair grace period for late bloomers, maybe there could be a small grace window for early risers.

I am also a long time Steinberg customer (Pro 12), and I’ve heard loads of really bad company practices from other DAW users. And I do have to say say, with delight, that in the last year or two, Steinberg has really turned around and become a little more like they used to be. I.e. in the past. Allowed to talk to us, explain things, etc. That is really top notch!

I really had missed that for quite a while and was actually semi-looking about for an alternative. As can be understood, I never found one that made “disco”, for me at least. I even installed a machine with a Studio One demo.

Anyways, it’s hard not to like Steinberg’s software. I think maybe that’s why people keep coming back to their booth.

I said somewhere else on the forum that it seemed the 6.5 upgrade move was a strategy to add more content, with even more quality, to Cubase, without us having to wait for a major Cubase 7 upgrade. Sort of a natural re-alignment process, which I for one, think was a brilliant idea.

While everybody’s complaining about the price I’d like to say I’ve tried the new comping set up and think it’s fantastic. A big improvement on C5 let alone C6.05. The synths don’t mean much to me and the filters are not going to be used a lot but I’m happy to pay for the rest.
Big thanks

"Reaper might be good for tracking but as a mixing tool… "

Funny. To me it is the other way around. I am unhappy with Reaper’s take system. But for mixing I find it a lot better.

You can route whereever you want.

Swap synths like Kontakt 4 for Kontakt 5, but keep the tracks and routing.æ

You can “render” everything going through a bus folder with a single click. The mixdown track wil be inserted above it, and everything inside the bus folder will be muted and not use any ressources. OMG what a lot of work it is to do something giving the same result in Cubase …

Not to mention how Reaper uses screen real estate, e.g. the mixer is resizeable and dockable … I could go on with things I prefer in Reaper.

Anyway, I paid for the 6.5 upgrade. I haven’t even bothered to install the new synths. I wish developers would concentrate on improving the basic DAW and leaving things like synths and plugins to 3rd parties. I have hardly ever used any of Steinberg’s own plugins.

I am not clear about how this “grace period” will work for my situation:
Last week I purchased the upgrade from Cubase Studio 5 to Cubase 6. I ordered it from an online retailer and I will get it this week. Will I be eligible for the free 6.5 update under the grace period, or is Studio treated the same as Artist, requiring a fee for the update?
(I moved this post to a more relevant thread)

Interesting, with Suntower’s request for infinite routing rather than via sends, and now your request for Mix Folders, Steinberg will have some more things to consider as it seems people are happy now with comping and lanes.

Well I just wanted to add to all of this that it’s clear to me that Cubase is the most valuable, most mission critical component of my studio…

…and probably one of the least expensive.

I don’t think many could say otherwise if they took a step back and realized that most single mic preamps cost more than Cubase. A good set of headphones. Even some cable snakes. Etc.

Thanks Steinberg for continuing to innovate here.

thanks dude!!

Hoping some cpu spike issues might have been corrected I bought 6.5. It doesn’t seem to have had any impact on that. Cubase stiull freaks out if there are too many group tracks automated to be silent.

Another problem though - a new feature has been added to the audio editor; when you ctr click on an event the audition tool comes up. Unfortunately, I have always used ctr click to move events up or down without changing positions in the time line - as you have to do when you glue something and it appoears on toip of the material which existed oin the event - how is this done now?

You can change the way modifiers are used, in settings.

This is not new to 6.5. I have 6.0.5 and it is the same. Just delay the CTRL until after you click and start to drag.

Through all that I’ve read (so far), some people feel that the new version 6.5 is a rip off while some are happy bunnies. My observation is that an upgrade should have increased functionality not just bug fixes, which, with the the additioon of two new synths, and two or three new plugins and the other “upgraded aspects” constitutes exactly that! However, if certain bug fixes or code “improvement” is being left out of the 6.06 release, purely as an incentive to go for the 6.5 release this will be very unfair on we who do not need or want the extra vsti’s or plugins etc. I hve no intention of buying into 6.5 at least untill i’ve checked out 6.06. The cynic in me does take my hat off to the Steinberg marketing team! By releasing 6.5 BEFORE the 6.06 update is available, they have taken advantage of those of us who “just can’t wait” or the “must have the latest and greatest crew” and in that we only have outselves to blame. The real question is… do you need what is being offered in the upgrade, as opposed to the update. Pesonally I’ve been champing at the bit for 64 bit rewire since I got v6 but i’m a patient man so I’ll bide my time. To Chris and Helge, I think it would be fair if you looked into the crystal ball and tell us if this is the end of the line with 6.0x updates since there does seem to be more stuff wot needs fixed.

Not sure about those who “need” it but I know there are a bunch of us who would like TO GET IT since we have paid for it. There appears to still be problems with the d/l link and the installers.

I wish they would at least give a bit of a priority to those who HAVE PAID but have been unable to receive the product. Starting to remind me of that classic Steve Miller song…

“Take the Money and Run”…

Please Helge/Chris…get your support team or Asknet crackin and help us out.

What I want to know is why a file will render fine one week, then when you come back to it and add a couple of fade in’s and fadeouts suddenly the asio meter is spiking all over the place. And why, when you have CPU overload errors that pop up on occasion, some computer induced glitches still manage to make it into “successful” renders.

And why this is even a problem with a quad core processor running at 4GHz trying to deal with rendering a file that is composed of 50 or so mono audio tracks being processed mostly with external plugins and UAD plugins.

I would ask tech support, but their job mainly seems to be to deflect blame away from Steinberg.

I’m starting to wonder if it might be time to learn Pro Tools.

You can put me in in the “Steinberg are a disgrace” category:) I upgraded from studio 5 last novemberish and have had plenty of glitches/issues with cb 6.
My opinion is that the improved functionalities should be included in the 6.06 update and the new synths etc should be sold as cb 6.5.

It gets tiring seeing software companies releasing 3/4 baked products before time and then double charging their customers for something it should have done in the first place. Case in point would be propellorheads charging reason & record customers for reason 6 which was basically just an amalgamation of the two in 1 program + 3 new fx (record was a shambles of an idea on it’s own).
Thankfully prop’s reneged on bleeding their customers and introduced a pay what you like option for R&R owners which I for one was grateful of. Well donepropellorheads , boooooh Steinberg!

I believe you will find that this is exactly the case.

Are the comping and audio quantizing tools are included in 6.06? If so I’m willing to be wrong:)

Padshop was announced prior to the 6.5 update and no price was specified, however prior to 6.5 being announced a maintenance fix was proposed.

It may be likely that the comping tools are not part of the maintenance update but rather basic lanes functionality is.

Yea, like I said I’d see the comping and audio quantizing as a functionality update and not a luxury item per se, that’s why I think it’s greedy of SB to be charging for these things from a product that’s barely a year off the floor. Just an opinion.

Yes, a speculative one at that shared by many but as yet unproven.

The speculation is base on this SB statement fro KVR 6 days ago, so unless they’ve grown a conscience in the last week it probably won’t happen. And if they are including these features they should just come out and say it now and put an end to these speculations. Unless you know something I don’t this is all the info we have to go on.

Dear Cubase v6 users,

Cubase 6.0.6 is just around the corner! We are happy to bring you the long-awaited ReWire x64 support, which
connects Cubase to ReWire client applications in a pure 64-bit environment under Windows and Mac OS X.

In addition we also provide the following issue resolutions for Cubase 6 derivatives*:

  1. Plug-in: Scaling the user interface now works properly with FXpansion instruments.
  2. Plug-in: Changing of knob mode in Preferences now applies directly to opened VST plug-in windows and does no longer require an unloading and reloading of the plug-in.
  3. VST Expression: Vienna Symphonic Library titles now work correctly with Expression maps, even when the entry for Articulation 1 is empty.
  4. VST Expression: Placing different parts that contain VST Dynamic events on the same track now works as expected.
  5. VST Expression: When using VST Dynamics events, no drop outs of other MIDI events on the track will occur.
  6. Surround: Processing 5.0 surround audio offline with Waves C360 (v9 or higher) no longer leads to memory issues.
  7. Surround: 5.0 surround audio files now import with a correct speaker configuration (LCRLfeLs).
Cool Pool: Empyting the pool no longer leads to stability issues.
  8. Video: Playing back projects containing certain video files using Cubase LE 6 / AI 6 / Elements 6 no longer renders the application unreliable
  • Please note that this list applies to Cubase 6 and not every entry may apply to Cubase Artist 6, Cubase Elements 6, Cubase AI 6 or Cubase LE 6.

The 6.0.6 maintenance update will be available next week as a free download for all registered Cubase users.

Thanks for choosing Cubase!
