I’m finally getting around to getting current. When I upgrade from 6 to 9.5 will my insert preset chains remain? Also, will I have to find my 3rd party plugins after the upgrade?
Should I back up songs before the upgrade?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, yes (both if you have been using 64-bit Cubase already), not necessarily.
Cubase 6 and Cubase 9.5 are independent applications. So your Cubase 6 will remain on your computer and you will be able to use it (if something gets wrong in Cubase 9.5).
