Hi dear colleagues,
Well, as I already mentioned in other threads related to Linux… FreeBSD, or some FreeBSD-based desktop distro would be the perfect solution, for those who don’t like Windows, and don’t want to invest money in MacOS.
Why FreeBSD?
- Well MacOS is based on FreeBSD.
- both OSes share many things in common
- they are far much closer to each other than MacOS to Linux
- Porting the Steinberg products to FreeBSD, in theory, would be much easier process, than building them for any Linux distro.
- Porting the Audio drivers from MacOS, to FreeBSD would be also much easier.
- FreeBSD is far more stable than Linux.
- FreeBSD is more secure than Linux.
- FreeBSD has better performance than Linux.
- less resources.
- faster
- FreeBSD is easier for administration than Linux.
- straightforward control over the processes.
- easier Kernel re-compilation, in case it’s needed.
- Better quality control over the software that can be installed with the package manager.
- The BSD family contains three main distributions:
- FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD
- Both OpenBSD and NetBSD are server oriented, and not very Desktop friendly.
- FreeBSD serves the both server and Desktop purposes. There are even FreeBSD-based distros, which are Desktop oriented.
In conclusion MacOS is based on FreeBSD, and FreeBSD is the only Desktop-friendly distro, two factors that makes it the best solution as an alternative audio OS, plus everything mentioned above.
Best regards,
