Cubase for Linux II

Wait, my Win10 computer will abruptly stop working in October?

No. But it should not be connected to internet.

I think there is a good amount of hyperbole in that statement.

Hi dear colleagues,

Well, as I already mentioned in other threads related to Linux… FreeBSD, or some FreeBSD-based desktop distro would be the perfect solution, for those who don’t like Windows, and don’t want to invest money in MacOS.

Why FreeBSD?

  1. Well MacOS is based on FreeBSD.
  • both OSes share many things in common
  • they are far much closer to each other than MacOS to Linux
  • Porting the Steinberg products to FreeBSD, in theory, would be much easier process, than building them for any Linux distro.
  • Porting the Audio drivers from MacOS, to FreeBSD would be also much easier.
  1. FreeBSD is far more stable than Linux.
  2. FreeBSD is more secure than Linux.
  3. FreeBSD has better performance than Linux.
  • less resources.
  • faster
  1. FreeBSD is easier for administration than Linux.
  • straightforward control over the processes.
  • easier Kernel re-compilation, in case it’s needed.
  1. Better quality control over the software that can be installed with the package manager.
  2. The BSD family contains three main distributions:
  • FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD
  • Both OpenBSD and NetBSD are server oriented, and not very Desktop friendly.
  • FreeBSD serves the both server and Desktop purposes. There are even FreeBSD-based distros, which are Desktop oriented.

In conclusion MacOS is based on FreeBSD, and FreeBSD is the only Desktop-friendly distro, two factors that makes it the best solution as an alternative audio OS, plus everything mentioned above.

Best regards,
Thurisaz

If this topic is about Linux and FreeBSD is another operating system, aren’t you hijacking the topic with your post?

Look it up:

I don’t think so, @Thurisaz is expressing an informed and useful opinion in favor of something other than Linux, so perhaps no less off-topic than people expressing disdain for the idea of a Linux version along with support for their personal favourite Mac or Windows versions.

We could start another thread “Cubase for FreeBSD”, but I’ll leave that decision to @Thurisaz .

Hello @MrSoundman and @Johnny_Moneto,

As @MrSoundman already mentioned, I’m not trying to hijack the topic, by presenting FreeBSD here.
I am sharing my personal experience as a former Linux and BSD server system administrator. I have worked with Debian, Debian-based and RedHat-based Linux distros. Some of the servers were running FreeBSD and OpenBSD. My home desktop, back then was also FreeBSD, and Ubuntu at work.
Linux gained more popularity than BSD, through the years, just because it was more oriented towards the desktop users, than BSD, but nowadays there are some desktop oriented FreeBSD-based distros, even MacOS itself could be cosidered as such.
I’ve just wanted to share some thoughts about an operating system that is superior in many aspects over Linux, and could be the better choice.

Here are some pros and cons for Steinberg:

Pros:

  • If they decide to port the Steiny products to FreeBSD, they won’t need to hire more staff to develop and test their products. Due to the common things shared by both FreeBSD and MacOS, probably the current team will be able to support FreeBSD, or some FreeBSD-based distro.

Cons:

  • If they decide to use some Linux distro, like Ubuntu Studio, for example, they will need to hire more people to develop and test the software. Because linux is completely different than MacOS.

Well, I wasn’t thinking about starting a separate discussion about “Cubase/Nuendo/Dorico for FreeBSD”, but probably I should do it?!

Best regards,
Thurisaz

Personally I think you should. Why? Because of the voting system in this forum. People who vote here are in favour of Linux support. Anybody who likes your idea and votes for it will actually vote for a Linux support.

Right now there are only 20 votes on the topic. I believe this won’t persuade the company to focus on linux. If a big portion of users would accept a new Cubendo-Version which is basically the same as before, but with linux-support and bug fixes, then I guess it will happen.

There are other topics with votes asking for a Linux version than this one. Summing up the votes from all topics should put this feature request in the top 10.
Many of the feature request topics with the most votes are 5+ years old. This could lead one to think that user votes are not much considered when Steinberg chooses what to put resources on for an upcoming version.

I don’t think the votes on the forum are representative. Probably a public survey with an adequate email / social campaign and a press release could give Steinberg the idea of how many people would be willing to pay for a Linux version. As I said already, I would pay full price.

As I don’t think there would be much appeal to SB due to the market size, platform complexity and code age of Cubase/Nuendo, the best thing to do is to start a private GoFundMe campaign to prove that there is a market that would pay (don’t forget they’d have to get up to speed on supporting Linux systems and the myriad options therein), so I think the goal would have to be quite large.

Heck, we can’t even get them to add meters that act like VU meters (for an audio application? Who would want that?!) after over a decade of requests and hundreds of messages, or even the ability to have a forum tag so posters can indicate what platform they’re onn when asking a question, so like us all, you’re just screaming into the void.

I moved my vote from a similar thread from 2015. (About 350 posts there).
And there are a few similar threads about this that you need to sum up.
But Im not sure if the voting is the right reason for such decision, it should be based on technical merits.
Famous (probably not correct) quote from Henry Ford about his cars.
If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.

“You can have any OS you want - as long as it’s Windows or MacOS.”

I’m with you on this. Ardour exists as a recording solution and Audacity is being re-designed for modern use by Tantacrul and open source devs but linux support for Steinberg products is alarmingly non-existent. It isn’t just Cubasis II and the effects. The hardware drivers don’t exist in the linux mainline kernel that would allow audio interfaces to work well. There is no official support for a mainstream distribution like Ubuntu which would enable support on almost every Ubuntu based distribution out there including Pop_OS! We should be able to use our microphones and effects on something other than Windows. Like you said Microsoft is becoming hostile to creatives and audio engineers. They break features on accident and their OS is becoming increasingly unstable and invasive. Its only a matter of time before there is a real need for an alternative.

Right now the only thing stopping me from buying a UR12-MK3 for myself is the lack of linux support. Almost all of my broke college student computers are incapable of running Windows 11 because they don’t meet the steep requirements. Although the competing Topping EX2 interface is Chinese and more expensive there are anecdotal reports of it working well on Linux as a microphone device. This community needs Linux support badly.

Oh you’ve got to be kidding me. Is nothing sacred?

Thanks for your mail, but sorry, what do you mean with “is nothing sacred” ?

It seems to be a referral to @dsone1’s post about a new feature of Windows Notepad which can generate text based on Co-Pilot prompts. While this feature is real, it’s limited to Co-Pilot Plus PCs and is available to those who sign on to their MS account and pay credits to use the service.

In other words, if you don’t want it, don’t use it.

Ugh I hate it. At ViewSonic they went all in and we all have these ‘pro’ accounts in our organization. They keep telling us all this crap about ‘AI is the future you need to start using it now’ but they still cant tell us HOW its supposed to help or what exactly to do with it and what big stuff they think its going to do for us heh. Its like they’re just jumping on the bandwagon hoping to discover the next big thing before someone else does, but they have no idea what they’re doing with it aside from people letting it write emails for them heh.
