Whenever I try to open a project file it begins loading before it hangs. Then the little box is stuck on “reading project file” or something like “connecting media”. I then have to force shut down my entire windows pc and open up the Cubase hub again. When I do it gives me the crash report but it says:
Application was terminated with an error when executing the following file:
Freeze
If this error persists, please send the following log files to Technical Support:
D:/Documents/Steinberg/CrashDumps/Cubase 13.0.40 64bit 2025.8.16 2.23.36.391-freezedump.dmp
I can’t find anything about this online, on any of these forums and when I manage to find something similar no one has any answers or solutions. I cant find where this “freeze” file is or what it means for me. Only thing I can correlate this to is that I updated my windows pc before this all started happening.
My specs:

Installed RAM - 64.0 GB (63.8 GB usable)

Hi,
It’s not supported to have Cubase installed on other but the system C drive.
Please, attach the mentioned freezedump.dmp file.
Cubase 13.0.55 64bit 2025.8.17 6.44.38.748-freezedump.dmp (1.6 MB)
Cubase 13.0.55 64bit 2025.8.16 5.28.58.153-freezedump.dmp (1.2 MB)
Im a little confused, I don’t remember specifically putting cubase on anything other than my c drive. can u give me the steps on how to uninstall and reinstall cubase on the c drive safely? will i lose all my work from my projects?
Edit: I checked the download assistant and it says it is installed on my c drive
Hi,
The freezes are in the:
ntdll!NtDeviceIoControlFile+0x14
KERNELBASE!DeviceIoControl+0x121
kernel32!DeviceIoControlImplementation+0x81
focusriteusbasio+0x8a8c
0x14df10
Make sure, you have the latest version of the Focusrite driver installed. If this is the case, get in touch with their support, please.
Thanks for the response. I updated them already. I also uninstalled everything, then reinstalled and made sure it was updated. The problem still persists but I haven’t gotten the same error. I did contact Focusrite support though, so I’m just waiting to see what they say.
Nvm lol, got another freeze crash after it hung again and had to reboot.
Idk if it’s the same issue or not.
Cubase 13.0.55 64bit 2025.8.17 15.12.41.143-freezedump.dmp (2.0 MB)
I think every one of your .dmp files has ntdll and kernelbase in the stack each time. The “failure bucket” for this one was focusriteusbasio.dll.
The first thing I would do is run these two utilities (as admin) just to make sure you’ve fixed file consistencies and repaired any system file issues:
sfc /scannow
dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Does wonders
That won’t necessarily help if the issue is in the focusrite driver, but it could if that just happened to be in the stack if a system file was the culprit.
Good to do anyway…. Make sure you have a backup of course and standard disclaimers apply
Sorry, I don’t really have any idea what you said means. I don’t know what a kernal base, stack, or ntdll is. What two utilities am I supposed to run as admin? and where can I find them? And what do I do with the Sfc/scannow and dism/online/cleanup-image/restorehealth? I might need a step by step explanation lol
“sfc” and “dism” are the two utilities
They are part of the Windows distribution itself, so you can run them directly from the CMD prompt (as admin). I would probably suggest you find some videos like this one:
I would run SFC first and then DISM (he runs them in the opposite order), but that’s just me.
You can ignore the “log review” part if you’re OK with “trusting” Windows. It may be worth a look, but it may not mean that much to you if you’re not into that sort of thing

Thank you! I’ll watch it and try it
The dump file shows the crash is basically totally unrelated to Cubase, it crashes already when the driver is loaded by Windows
It is pretty hard to find the real cause without the abiltity to trace it on your system, but these messages point to an I/O Problem (Device Input/Output Control). This means the driver seems to have trouble talking to the Focusrite device.
Try to disconnect the device and connect it to another port. Make sure it is cleanly activated in the Windows Device Manager and then try it again to use it with Cubase.
I’d echo the advice to connect to a different port. Also make sure that you don’t have other devices with high current draw on the same port. Try using a different USB cable. Try disconnecting other devices. Have a look at the power-saving settings for this device (you might need to open the Device Manager for that)
Thanks for the clarification, it’s starting to make a lot more sense. I’m just relieved it’s most likely the Focusrite device’s fault and not Cubase. I’ll try some different ports and cables and check to see if it’s properly activate.
