Cubase says Allen & Heath Zed 14 "device not connected"

hi, i just got mixer Allen and Heath ZED 14 .
i installed the latest USB drivers. windows can see it has an audio interface,()windows sound setting jpg)
Cubase 12 also as a driver selection, (show driver jpg) but when i try to switch the Asio driver, Cubase puts the message " device not connected to PC" when it is ! (no device jpg)
what can i do to resolve this?

(by the way Wavelab 11 does not even see the asio as a option of selection

)

Hi,

Very often ASIO4ALL driver helps in these cases.

thanks, i’m going to try that

ok, i see the asio4all works, but it does not interact with USB data sent to the ZED 14, this way i still can’t use the USB routing features to insert and send my hardware to the mixer.

my problem is not laking an audio interface i have RME fireface UC , i just changed the mixer from Mackie 1442vlz3 to the Allen & Heath ZED14 which has usb connection not only for the audio interface but also to be in sync with the DAW and has been able to record directly from the data send to usb via aux channels. with Asio4All, it is only the audio side that is working no functions of the mixer react to it .

This mixer seems to be rather straightforward. I see you have a dedicated ASIO driver for it, I wasn’t able to find one to download.

Please be aware that in Cubase you can only use one audio device. You’d have to chose between the mixer or the Fireface UC.

You mentioned a sync between the mixer and the DAW but except for audio clock there is nothing to sync on the mixer, so I am not sure what you are referring here to.

You further mention that with ASIO4ALL the audio side works but non of the functions of the mixer. After having read the manual of the mixer I could not find any functions that ought to be able to work that are regulated through software. There is only the button on the mixer to select which audio signal is supposed to be send via USB (BTW, USB 1.1). Maybe you can elaborate on what you are missing.

Have you considered not to connect your mixer via USB to the computer but rather via analog audio cables to the Fireface UC?

well now we are getting a bit out of Cubase subject and more about the mixer.
but when i see videos about setting this type of mixer and connecting it to the USB when you open a project faders should go up by themselves, but the part i was interested in exploring with this mixer is that you can record directly your signal with your external effect via the USB data. that is if understood it right. but i haven’t figured out yet how to make the proper routing with my external fx rack, to send the dry signal to the FX rack and back to a record channel on the mixer. for now, I’m using the Fireface as audio interface for working, and this routing via USB test are in my mind and i try when i have a moment of work pause only

Have you contacted Allen and Heath yet? This could be an issue with their ASIO driver.
Do you know that an ASIO driver works completely independent of a regular Windows audio driver? Ie. the mixer working in Windows doesn’t mean anything in regards to Cubase.

Regarding the routing: it is curious that Allen and Heath set up their manual in such way that the computer (and the DAW) is being treated like an effect device for the mixer. Is that what you are trying to as well? But to which medium would you record then?

Neither the product page nor the manual mentions motorized faders in any way. Does the ZED-14 have motorized faders? Otherwise they cannot be moved by anything else but you.

What I would do:

Disconnect the device
Goto the Device manager of Windows → Software devices - and delete the Allen and Heath as a device.
If the device is not listed, you may need to go into the View menu and select ‘Show hidden devices’
Restart the PC
Connect the Mixer again ( and wait a few seconds for the driver to be installed again)
Open cubase and select the driver as you did before

ZED 14 is not part of the ZEDi Series.
Two different products.
As far as I remember, there is only a stereo interface available in the older ZED range mixers. And this has no ASIO driver.

The mixer has no motor faders.
So nothing will move. Maybe you looked the wrong videos?

Who told you that?
Non of this functionality is possible with it.

I installed the ZEDi drivers but it did not change anything. So I uninstalled it. Plugged the ZED 14 mixer in different USB ports on the computer.
I actually now fix the issue by loading the " generic low-latency Asio driver from Steinberg. And opened the control panel and there I could assign the in/out USB from the mixer.
by the way, you are right the faders don’t go up, its true that the videos i watched were for Allen and Heath mixer but i did not find one for specifically the ZED 14 i just assumed was the same system.
i hope this now will help anyone with this situation in the future

Allen & heath has the whole palette of mixers available, small analogue mixers with USB, up to networked mixing systems with over 800 inputs and outputs.
The new CQ mixers are very interesting for home studio work.
But again, no faders moving.
