Cubase startup error "freeze" and hanging up

Hi,

When my computer is freshly restarted, and open Cubase 13, I get an error “The application was terminated with an error while executing the following file” “Freeze”.

I can proceed from the error by clicking “Use current program…”, and it opens ok.

If I Quit the program, it remains in the Task Manager ™, so I end task. When I try to restart it, it adds another instance of Cubase in TM, and if I close the old one, it proceeds to open but gets hung up on the stage (according to TM) of “checking licenses”.

Attached is the error file from Cubase, and screen shot.

Can you tell which license is an issue, if in fact that is the issue?

I’ve updated Cubase, activation manager, ilok, and audio interface control software.

I see this post, but don’t see a solution (and I don’t exactly have the problem upon close).

https://forums.steinberg.net/t/cubase-pro-12-this-application-was-terminated-with-an-error-on-each-shutdown/770710/24 tart up.

Cubase 13.0.55 64bit 2026.2.27 11.07.40.244-freezedump.dmp (541.6 KB)

…On the error screen,I tried using the options to not load 3rd party plug ins, and also forgo program preferences, but neither one allowed me to Quit the program in a way where I could reopen it again without the hang up.

I’m away from my machine right now but, if nobody else gets there first, I’ll have look at the dump in a couple of hours.

The failure is in wdmaud2 which is the new Midi 2.0 service being rolled out by Microsoft.

Pete Brown from Microsoft (@Psychlist1972 ) has been doing the rounds on this forum following up on some of the issues. The main one so far has been the M-Audio Midisport interface, which has some inherent driver issues. Do you have one installed on your rig?

remove any drivers yo have for any midi devices and uninstall from the device manager those devices as well.

Reboot and let windows install the default drivers and see if that works.

I had similar problem, it did every second time, I got crash on close, sometimes on load project etc.. I go to settings and for midi and turn off all chasing events except notes and pitchband. And also midi filter. I am not sure if it is part of the problem, but then I change to not use NVidia (graphic card) to use Cubase.

I have NVidia and had included Cubase in NVidia panel (sorry I don’t know how it is named in english, panel is translated to my language). I remove Cubase from the panel and now Cubase not freeze anymore. That was fix for me.

Here is picture how it looks like (picture is from web, not my panel, but it looks same)

You click on combobox and scroll to Cubase if it is there (if not, you have another problem, not related to this), select it, and then click on remove, and don’t forget to click on apply on the bottom side.

I do in fact have an (ancient) M-Audio Midisport.

What would the solution be? Norbury_Brook mentioned to remove any midi drivers and uninstall them from Device Manager as well. I’ll give that a try. Let me know if there is any other actions I should take.

Norbury Brook is right. Delete the driver, disconnect your device, reboot Windows and reconnect. If the device uses a class-compliant USB driver it will pick it up on reconnect.

If it does not then unfortunately it’s not going to work until MS comes up with a fix.

Resolved: I removed the midisport software viaWindows add/remove. I didn’t see it in device manager.

When I restarted, the problem persisted, but noticed that Cubase shut down properly, and upon the second restart the problem vanished. (note: I did not uninstall my other Arturia, and Korg midi programs in add/remove, nor did I uninstall them from Device Manager, thus the problem was solely with Midiman midisport).

The midisport no longer shows up in Cubase and the led isn’t lit, so like you say, I’ll have to wait for MS for a fix.

Thanks much. I definitely would not have found the issue without your help.

the Midi sport anniversary devices work fine if you can pick one of those up second hand perhaps.

Hey, I’m crashes too and Cubase is telling me it’s because of this “Freeze” it was trying to execute. I don’t have any midi instruments connected. Any other solutions to this? I’m getting real pissed off from all of these crashes that seemingly just started happening.

your audio interface may have midi connections though. What interface do you use?
