Ho @thomas5 , I tried, and indeed the newly created Piccolo Oboe, even if present in the instrument picker, will be added and activated in the score only if you click on the star for it in the Instruments Editor window. After clicking on the star, you need to add the instrument again to the player in Setup mode, and it will be loaded:
@Lillie_Harris
In the manual it says that the white star is optional, but it seem to be necessary to save as default (white star), to let the instrument be added and activating for the current projects in which I created the new instrument (otherwise it will show up in the instruments picker but will not be loaded). Do I miss something? :
I can confirm this problem – it’s related to another issue that has been reported here concerning the creation of custom percussion kits, which sometimes fails in a similar way. This will be corrected in the next update. Sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime.
This has not been fixed.
I just tried 4 times in row to create a new Bass Drum using Library → Instruments. I copied the existing bass drum, renamed it and white-starred it. It does not appear in the instrument picker in other projects. Not after trying 4 times, after closing the projects and reopening them, closing Dorico and reopening that, or restarting my computer. Just lost in the ether.
It has worked other times. But not this time.
I do not know what condition or variable is responsible.
In this case it is occurring in an existing project.
Here is an example of some of the white-starred instruments I have in the Library. All of the instruments with “Synchron” and “SD3” in the title are white-starred:
So I do not know all of the “coordinates” of the error, as in which factors must be present to induce the problem, but the error certainly still persists in some form, and seems to exclude all white-starred instruments from the instrument picker when invoked.
Please zip up the userlibrary.xml file from your user-level application data folder and attach it here, so I can take a look at the instruments that are saved in your user library.
Craig, we can’t help you resolve these problems without the actual files you’re working with. Please refer to my previous reply in this topic, where I asked you to zip up your userlibrary.xml file and attach it here. We can then see what instruments are saved in the user library and I should be able to reproduce the problems you’re experiencing with these instruments not appearing in the picker. Unfortunately, without your specific data files, we cannot provide any practical support.
When you’re ready to share your userlibrary.xml file, I’ll be pleased to take a look and see if I can pin down the problem.
I probably have a similar issue linked to the user added instrument functionality.
I have a Dizi in D and one in G. I created both in the instrument list editor with the correct transposition and playing range.
In the instrument editor window I now see two instruments with the name Dizi but there are now several issues.:
-1-
you do not see the transposition behind the user added instrument, so (D), and (G), as you see for all original Dorico instruments in the list. You just see twice the same name Dizi in the list
-2- when you want to add this instrument in the picker there is only one Dizi. The other is not shown. Interesting enough when you pick the only one available the transposition is shown correctly like for original Dorico instruments. So in the picker it is Dizi and in the Setup it becomes Dizi (D).
The only workaround to have both accessible in the picker which I found is to put the two Dizis in different instrument families. I put one in Woodwinds and the other in a self created family VSL. The transposition is still not shown in the picker but both instruments are correctly loaded showing the transposition…
Even if I call the instruments Dizi in D and Dizi in G in the instrument editor but leave them both in family Woodwinds only Dizi in D is shown in the picker.
Thanks Christian, I have always understood that the transposition setting under instrument name refers to the way the instrument is shown in the score (staff title). So I always have “Follow the layout” which most Dorico instruments with multiple transpositions have.
You seem to be able to add two dizis under woodwinds which for me did not work. I used the same procedure as you describe. In the mean time I found a solution which is probably the way to always add instruments with multiple transpositions.
I first created a Dizi in G calling it simply Dizi and then created a variant from this instrument and entered the D transposition. Now I have one Dizi with on the right side the two transpositions in the instrument picker.
In the instrument editor there are now also two dizis with the transpositions shown between brackets.
