Custom instrument playback - automatic assignment?

I have observed when creating custom or modified instruments, that there does not seem to be a way to control how they are assigned with relation to playback templates.

For example, I created an alternate Horn in F in Alto Clef for writing purposes (and idea I’ve seen used by Jerry Goldsmith, Bruce Broughton, and Prokofiev). I originally duplicated this instrument from the Horn in F (Treble Clef Transposed Pitch) and simply swapped for alto clef. But every time I add it to a score, all my playback templates will default it to a piano sound.

Same goes for some modifications I’ve made to basic saxophone and tuned percussion.

I’m assuming that the endpoint configurations and instruments in these playback templates (NotePerformer for example), when they don’t see the exact name of my instrument, simply fall back to a piano?

Is there any way when creating custom instruments to force them to assign or fall-back to a desired sound? Or will I have to modify the actual playback templates themselves somehow?

I’m encountering a similar problem. I’ve created custom instruments, made endpoint configurations, and added everything to a playback template. But when I apply the playback template the custom instruments are never assigned the proper VST instrument and expression map.
