Custom Instrument Playback Setup

Hey everyone,

I’m used to working with NotePerformer and not worrying too much about playback, since it is usually quite acceptable. However, there are always some sounds for particular custom instruments that I would like to improve.

For example, I’m writing for a custom orchestra that includes a special folk gran cassa, which can be played either in the middle of the drum or on the rim. When played in the middle, it sounds like a gran cassa; when played on the rim, it sounds more like a special backbeat.

The way I notate this instrument is with a drum staff: F is the low kick/gran cassa sound, and C is the special backbeat, imitating drum-set notation.

I would love to make this instrument trigger Spitfire BBCSO Pro’s gran cassa sound for the F note. For the C note, ideally I would like to trigger a real sample using Waves CR8 Sampler.

So my questions are:

Is it possible to have one single Dorico percussion instrument trigger two different VSTs, depending on the written note?

Ideally, I would like this behavior:

  • When I write F, it triggers the gran cassa sound from Spitfire.
  • If there is no tremolo, it plays the normal gran cassa sound.
  • If I write a tremolo, it triggers the tremolo/roll sound.
  • When I write C, it triggers the real backbeat sample in CR8 Sampler.

If using two VSTs for a single instrument is not possible, I could give up on the backbeat sample and just use the Spitfire gran cassa sound. In that case, I guess the C note could perhaps trigger another sound by using key switches or a custom expression map.

How can I learn to set this up properly?

Thank you very much in advance!

Dani

I know how to do this for non-percussion instruments – use Kontakt / Vienna Ensemble Pro to host the VSTs you want for that instrument, and write expression map to switch channels according to preset/custom playback techniques.

I am not sure for percussion instruments, perhaps a percussion map in additional to these. Let’s wait for a professional to supplement.
