Not sure if this is a feature request or if it already possible, I would like to be able to customise which players I need in set up. I do small band arrangements and occasionally re chart some of the hand written numbers in the big band when they are starting to get a little ragged. So for instance I would probably never use Contrabass Bugle and god forbid “bagpipes” but instead have a set of instruments I would use regularly in a drop down menu. A far as I can see I need to type in tru… to get trumpet and tenor sa… to get tenor sax. (I’m a slow typist)
I’m just noodling around Dorico trying to fathom out different ways of using it. But that seems like something I’m looking for. In finale the “add instruments” were grouped into "Common, Jazz, Orchestral etc so a drop down menu would show instruments of that group. I’m all for using shortcuts as much as possible.
Now I’ve added the ensemble how do I remove it? As the tenor sax part is now non transposing!
Before you do, check that it really isn’t transposing. Do you see it correctly adjust when you click the Transposed Pitch tab in the lower L corner?
Its got the 8 below the clef and in transposed pitch its in C whereas the tpt is in D
And you definitely added “Tenor Saxophone,” not “Tenor”? (which would be voice)
I really don’t know, I typed in “ten” and it just showed tenor so I presumed it would be tenor sax. Now I’ve got the jist of how it works I would like to remove that section from the choose list and redo it.
Yes, I’ve noticed the “auto-complete” is a bit finicky in that ensemble builder dialogue. I think “tenor sax” is sufficient.
What’s the full list of instruments you want to build?
Tpt/Ten/Trom/Piano/Bass. But it depends on which band I’m writing for, sometimes its just 2 horn charts sometimes 3, sometimes the trumpet section when the parts get dog-eared, and like I said we have some old hand written big band charts which are good and sadly the writers have since passed on so I would like to preserve those for the future. I was just trying to see if there was a way of having the different players grouped into an easy to load shortcut. I wasn’t to sure what some of the menus meant.
Yes, I can see from that octave-transposing clef that you got a vocal tenor part in there.
Typical Lol How do I delete that set up?
I would suggest you get a score set up the way you want with the full complement of players you might use in any actual project, then go to File > Save As Project Template… to have it ready at hand in the hub. It’s easy in any given project to delete instruments you don’t need.
I found this video really helpful when Dorico’s hub and setup features changed a couple of years ago:
Thanks I’ll try that. My method of working in finale was “cmd N” to open my default file which was set up the way I liked(font, chord library etc then use score manager to add instruments and use the the file info to add the title etc much like the project info in Dorico. I’m getting there slowly, trying different aspects of Dorico in different scenarios before saying bye bye finale.
You can simply change the instrument in Setup.
I know I can but I would like to delete that ensemble from from the Build/Choose ensemble in the setup.
I can’t actually see that it’s possible to delete those (!). Odd…
I’ve tried but like you can’t see a way of deleting them. Daniel!!!
