I’m trying to recreate these staff labels. I tried pressing enter after typing “1st” or “2nd” but there’s a huge spacing between the ordinal text and the instrument name. Another thing is that I’m experiencing a weird bug with tuplets. I have set the tuplet bracket to appear above the staff. However, they still appear below the staff. Any help would be greatly appreciated please!
dakota,
- Where have you set the bracket to appear above the staff?
- Do you know about the key command F? It’s for Flipping objects.
In engraving settings, and yes I know about pressing the “F” key flips things. However, I shouldn’t have to flip the brackets since I told Dorico I want them above the staff.
I found this on the help pages:
What setting exactly have you chosen in Engrave mode (I am not at my computer now)?
For your instrument label question:
I know that Dorico by default does a right align to the staff labels. To get left aligned staff labels one would have to change the Paragraph style for it. If you don’t like that, you could as workaround use Shift-X System text and drag it manually to the left of your stave. System-text can by formatted “on the fly” that’s why it can be handy sometimes. Better of course is changing the Paragraph style or even creating a new Paragraph style.
Not trying to be rude here, but I said that I changed that setting.
dakota, of course not, but just to be sure:
I went to my computer and could only find a setting related to vocal staves. That’s why I was asking:
Is there a setting I might have overlooked?
If you could post a cut down of your project, the issue can be cleared most probably.

I’ve doubled checked all of my settings. Also, I’ve started to manually flip some of the tuplets but I shouldn’t keep having to manually do so. Also, do you have any ideas on how to create the staff label I’m wanting to create?
Thanks for uploading your project dakota.
Yes you have the same settings I showed in my screenshot further up. This is for vocal staves only though. Dorico follows convention(*) by this, that tuplets are usually placed on the stem side. Thats probably, why there is no explicit setting for this and one has to use manual overrides.
(*)
# General placement conventions for tuplets
Tuplet brackets and tuplet numbers/ratios are generally placed on the stem side of notes. When tuplets are shown with a tuplet beam, a tuplet bracket is not always necessary but can be shown in addition to a tuplet number/ratio.
According to convention, tuplet brackets and tuplet numbers/ratios are always placed above the staff for vocal staves, so they do not come between notes and lyrics.
You’re welcome. I understand that it’s for vocal parts only, but I’m arranging for marching band, and the tuplets are always shown above the staff. I guess I’ll just manually flip them myself (no big deal). But what about my staff label issue? I’ve been trying to replicate the picture I posted, and nothing is working.
dakota, there is a thread about this quite a while ago. Basically, Dorico is misleading when you use the Edit Instrument Name dialogue.
In this interface it looks as if one can set the alignment of the text, but you actually can’t. You probably found this out yourself, I see you have tried to place instrument names in that field:
This doesn’t have any real effect to the positioning of the staff labels, because it’s the Staff Label Paragraph Style which reigns this. And where you have to do your formatting.
Can you please help me create the staff label then?
I haven’t done this myself yet, but let me first show this thread from 2019:
B.t.w. your score looks fantastic and I understand the need for getting it to perfection.
Well, I created a new project to test something out. I was able to go into the edit names area in setup mode, and create the staff label exactly how I wanted to. So why isn’t it working in the project I posted here?
dakota, instead you will have to go into the Paragraph Styles and do the edit there. It’s to be found under the Library menu.
As I have not done it myself; first thing I would check is the Staff Label Paragraph Style. Or we wait for someone else to jump in quickly.
[edit] your paragraph style is set to left align, so that’s correct for you]
My staff label settings in paragraph layout for the project I posted here match the new project’s staff label settings in paragraph layout. So, once again, I don’t understand why it’s not working for my current project.
Let me have a look again…
Ok, your Paragraph Style you have set correctly to left align:
(I don’t have your font, thats why Times is replacing it…)
I went to the Eb ALTO SAXOPHONE Edit (Instrument) Names again and did a “Reset to Default”. That sorted the alignement out. You would have to re-enter your name in Capitals again.
I can’t tell you, what exactly went wrong and how your exact steps where, but the “Reset to Default” might help:
OK, I found what the issue is. It’s whenever I manually add a flat symbol to a staff label is when I’m getting that weird spacing.
How do I change the music font for the default flat/sharp symbol that appears in the staff label?
I did it! I figured it out! I have successfully created the staff labels like how I want them to! I figured out how to change the default music text to what I needed it to be, adjust the baseline text and my staff labels are looking like how they should!
Don’t. When you are done with your score, select all, filter tuplets, check this box in properties:
