Da Capo al Segno, poi Coda playback possible?

Is it possible to have a section ending with the Segno sign, then a “coda” representing a second part and ending with a “D.C. al Segno”, manually edited to add a “poi Coda”, followed by another “coda” and having all this play back correctly?

So, played A B A C with written A(segno) B(DC al S poi Coda) C.

Real life example: Tchaikovsky The Seasons ‘December’

Yes, those repeat structures are easily doable in Dorico.

Is there a reason to have a Segno sign instead of a Coda sign where players should jump to the Coda section?

You might need to fake this with a little text.

I’m reproducing Tchaikovsky’s notation. There is a Segno sign at the end of Part 1, then there is Part 2 (Trio), then Part 1 is repeated and, at the end of that part one jumps to Part 3 (Coda). Proofreading is giving me all sorts of errors so it is clear that I am doing something wrong.

No problem doing that if playback works.

How, please?

  1. Start with the regular setup: “D.C. al Code” where to jump back, “To Coda” at the end of section A, “Code” at the End of section B.

  2. Select the “D.C. al Coda” and, in the properties panel, add custom text “D.C. al Segno poi Coda”

  3. Select “To Coda” and hide it.

  4. To replace the now hidden “To Coda”, create a new textbox, select “Music Text” and enter the symbol for “Segno”.

Just a sketch to give you an idea:

It works!

So, to make sure I understand: to have a “D.C. al Coda” one also needs a “To Coda” marker.

Thank you!

Yes, to understand reapeat structures (and have correct playback), Dorico needs them to be “standardized”. There are many options regarding how Dorico should render those components, but if you want something totally different (say, havein a Signo where normally would be a Coda), you have to do some switcherydoodle.
