Da Capo with repeat endings and Coda

Is there any way to get this structure to play back properly? Verse 1 (first ending), Verse 2 (second ending), Bridge (DC), Verse 3 (first ending), Verse 4 (to Coda)…

I’ve tried many many workarounds, without success. I was only able to get the correct playback by using two codas at bar 5 and 11 instead of repeat endings, but that’s pretty ugly!

The problem is that after the D.C. al Coda, Dorico will jump to the Coda as soon as it encounters the To Coda marker, so the start of verse three is followed by the end of verse four.

Here is the simplest way to get the playback sequence you want:

Thanks @johnkprice! Yes, that works, thanks. In the actual piece I’m working on that would make for a very long second ending! I’d prefer the score to appear as it does in my example, if there were some way to include hidden elements that produced the correct playback

To get correct playback while having the score appear as it does in the original post, start with the repeat endings as shown in my previous reply. In engrave mode, select the first ending bracket and change the property Custom text to 1 followed by a period. Select the second ending bracket and change End of line to Open, to next barline. Select the last ending bracket and change Y offset to a number large enough to move that bracket off the page. In write mode, add a To Coda after bar 2 and a Coda after bar 10. Change the end repeat barline before the Coda to a double barline and add a D.C. marker, changing its Custom text to D.C. al Coda.

These are the occurrences where I miss the Cubase Arranger Track…

Brilliant! Thanks @johnkprice, that works for my piece. I should note, though, that if the “To Coda” was elsewhere, say bar 2 in this example, that workaround wouldn’t work

If anyone from the Dorico team is listening, could you note a FEATURE REQUEST, to have the option to activate “To Coda” on the 2nd (or n) pass in a repeat structure?

This kind of form is easy to do with simple repeats, but impossible when there are multiple endings

Do you want correct playback with something like this?

Here is the project that gives the correct playback:

Very clever! I didn’t know a D.S. could go forward – that’s a very useful piece of information! So it can essentially function in the same way as a “To Coda” marker

For those who are interested, there are three D.S. markers and three Segnos at the downbeat of bar 2. They do nothing except keep count of the passes. Then there’s a D.S. index 2 at bar 2, and a Segno index 2 at bar 11. Here it is with the Codas hidden and the Segnos revealed. Remember that the “D.C. al Coda” marking is really just a “D.C.” marker with custom text, so the “To Coda” marker does nothing…

I like this solution better than adding a fourth repeat ending

DEVELOPER: Although @johnkprice has shown that this form is possible, I’d still consider it a “workaround”. It would be good to have a simple, “official” way to do this. I suggested a “To Coda on pass n” functionality, but you may have other (i.e. better) ideas. It would also be nice if the “To Coda” could work independently of any D.C. or D.S. markings, i.e. from simple repeats

@johnkprice This was my first post to the forum. Thank you for making it so interesting and helpful!

I just realized that only one Segno is needed in bar 2 of the project I provided in post #7. The same Segno can be shared by the first three D.S. markers in that bar.

Ah, that’s helpful. I was also able to get it to work with a D.S. at the end of bar 12, instead of D.C., like this…

…which is what my piece actually does. Even after Segno 2 has been played, it sill performs the D.S. 1 at bar 4 on the third pass, which is good because there’s an index limit of 3
