David Lowery on the ethics of music piracy

Just a bit of a advice, it’s well known on the internet that labeling and hate speech go hand in hand.

Totally agree with you on that. You forget to add the crusty.

I remember similar discussions like this on the old forum and as I recall it was none other than Dylan who said that

a) This is the internet

b) It is anonymous

c) No one really knows each other

d) It is a product forum

I think people would be well advised to stop judging one another otherwise my feeling is a round of banning will result and due to recent changes in the Steinberg website it would not surprise me if it was done at the dongle level.

Just a bit of advice; maybe you’re new here and don’t know the history between Kevin and I, spanning many years. But if you’ve been around, you know the truth of it (or ignore it).

Telling the truth isn’t “labeling” and it isn’t “hate speech”.

Finally, if I accept your premise (labeling = hate speech) and apply it to the insulting gibberish he has assaulted me with for a long time, then I’d have to conclude he has launched a lot of hate my way. I’ll try to keep an open mind on the matter, in case you’re right.

Putting words (words the other person did not say) in someones mouth is tantamount to lying, plain and simple. You need look no further that this thread (and a couple others on page 1 of this forum) to witness him doing that over and over. Quod erat demonstrandum.

Serial threadjackers should be waterboarded. :unamused:

Sorry @lenny

& swamptone, sure people say things on forums that aren’t true, rhetoric inferences and so on.

I may have the luxury of being new and one thing is for sure I don’t hold my username dear but this does not mean I am immune to ex-communication by Steinberg, so all I am saying to you is be careful how you respond.

I also never said labeling and hate speech are one and the same I am simply making an observation.

I don’t think that the subject uses Cubase. Tried and failed and now blames and bothers the company for a lack of writing a hit wonder and making money from it.
Failed would-be capitalists are the most tiresome of all “socialists”.
All blame and no solution. Never blame themselves while there’s still someone else left on the planet.
And as they say up north. All mouth and no trousers.

Please accept my apology for my part in it.

I’m saddened for tomorrow’s music lovers. In our lifetimes we’ve had -so- many outstanding artists with substantial bodies of work, whom we’ve all been able to enjoy - because they were able to make a living at it.

This Lowery/White exchange has gone viral on the net.
That’s a good thing, because it’s got people talking about it - but while there are good points being made on both sides,
I’m astounded by the amount of people who feel entitled to free music. They’re completely dismissive of the needs of the artists whose music provides the soundtrack of their lives.
I’ve read " the albums are just for the bands to get noticed, they make their money on touring and merchandise"
The truth is, for all but the big name acts, touring is often
A break even or even money losing proposition. The indie acts tour to get there name out there- and for what?
To come back home and write and produce their next
album, which their entitled fans can then grab from the net.

The best among us in the future will eschew music careers
because they’d like a decent standard of living or perhaps
even raise a family.
Oh sure, we’ll still have our Lady Gaga’s , Justin Beiber’s,
And the next American Idol star, but the -really- cool stuff, the indie artist who aren’t afraid to experiment and take chances, those guys’ music will be in short supply, made on weekends and put up on some site that most of us will never stumble across.
People can try to change the subject all they want. Blame it on capitalism - whatever. Corporations aren’t getting rich off of the money that the public isn’t paying for music.
It’s the artists who are getting hurt - and the consumers who don’t give damn.
When artists can’t afford to fully devote themselves to their art, it’s music lovers who’ll suffer in the long run, unless we come up with a workable solution.

Pardon me for going off topic. This thread is about
The Great Satan, isn’t it? As you were.

It’s simple Lenny, we have the web and we can write new music as we please.

Think for a moment what songs get parodied and what does not, only music with a very serious message ever remains untouchable.

Will one of swamptones pals counsel him that maybe he should get off his highhorse before he blows an o-ring?

(1) Stop poking at me and I’ll joyfully ignore you henceforth.

(2) Follow your own advice.

“The best among us” is certainly a product of heirarchal values.

But nonetheless, market capitalism has destroyed the credibility of popular music as serious social expression, and so folks are looking elsewhere, agreed… Very much like marijuana smoking - it has the capability of engendering too much easily accessable information contrary to the heirarchal money system, so highly controled it must be. But can’t keep the jean genie in the bottle forever…

No. This is really about intractable philosophical differences. You proceed to play the boss, and I’m my own boss. You’re opinions, identifications and fetishes with capitalism, nationalism, republicanism and all the rest of it, when offered publicly, are not above public criticism, just like anyone else here. Your hissy fits, meanacing demeanor and childish name calling only reveal the limits of your paleing and fading arguments.

Of course they can do that. I said that in my last post. Did you read the whole
comment? If they’re not properly compensated for their work, then they
Have to get another full time job to support themselves. Over time, there’s
Going to be a substantial difference in not only the quantity, But the quality
Of work of someone who is a hobbyist, and someone who devotes themselves
To it full time. THAT’S what we’ll lose, seeing great artists evolve
And reach their full potential. Maybe we’ll all get lucky and some will
Take the vow of poverty and forfeit family life.
I take it from your comment that you’re from the ‘music is free’ camp?

I am not a republican. I have told you that before, thus you have reason to know it.

My saying that you are a liar is not name-calling (nor childish), it is the truth. You lie. Your denials do not change the facts of that matter.

So now feel free to get the last word in; perhaps that will make you feel victorious. I will, for the first time ever (and hopefully the last), place you on my “Ignore/Foe” List.

You haven’t said anything specific. Bradley Manning revealed information pertaining to the torturing of human beings by the US military, human trafficing by the “defense contractors”, and a long list of other war crimes perpetrated by the invading US Armed Forces…INFORMATION DIRECT FROM THE MILITARYS OWN FILES< NOT HERESAY. My understanding from your personal screeds is you condone United States war crimes, and you do not agree with exposing United States war crimes.

I wish a Mod would just delete this rubbish.

This is a Cubase forum, if you want to talk about other stuff go away and find a more suitable forum.
Hijacking a thread with this nonsense… reporting this.

Lenny,

Just before I got married I had a talk with a friend that worked as a commercial artist. He was a talented painter, but couldn’t make a living from doing paintings and also support his family. So he got into commercial art and made a fair living. But it stuck in his craw. He always resented having to compromise himself doing product labels and laying out type, rather than expressing himself on canvas.

His best friend had contracted a terminal illness and begged him, on his deathbed, to take care of his wife. He promised to do that, and held to that promise the rest of his life, eventually marrying and supporting her and their children together. Almost every time I was with them together, they quarreled (sometimes bitterly). I always wondered what kept them together, or even how they came together in the first place. Once I knew, it really drove home the point he was about to make to me.

It was after telling his story that he looked me straight in the eye and said “If you want to be an artist, DO NOT get married.” I countered with “Lot’s of successful artists and musicians have families.” He says, “look into it and you will find that nearly all of them had families AFTER they had achieved success … not before.”

I got married any way. I thought I could do it all, the family and the music. But I learned that, when it comes to the Arts, our Muse accepts no compromises. He was right. In any case, I’d do it the same all over again … even knowing what I know now.

Well, that seems to be the state of play … it’s a mess. I doubt it’s all that much different today for Artists to succeed than it was during the Renaissance (a golden age), or any other era. How many masterpieces have been burned over the millennia so starving artists could keep from freezing?

Music for centuries has expressed itself through the most serious social issues. If you want lite, go to the Justin Beiber forum. Last time i checked, music has not yet been thoroughly censored. Probably never can be.

This is not the only game in town. ~Saint Zenda
