Hello,
I’m currently running a cascaded setup with three Steinberg UR824 interfaces, connected via ADAT, and using Cubase 14 on the latest version of the Yamaha Steinberg USB driver and dspMixFx.
My hardware setup gives me access to 24 analog outputs and 24 analog inputs, and I would like to utilize all 24 outputs for routing audio to outboard gear using Cubase’s External FX system. However:
- The dspMixFx Output Routing menu for ADAT-connected interfaces only offers DAW Out 1–16, even though I have 24 outputs physically available and properly connected.
- DAW Out 17–24 do not appear as selectable options in either Cubase or dspMixFx.
This effectively limits Cubase to 16 usable DAW output paths, even though the hardware supports 24 — which severely restricts outboard gear integration in a professional mixing workflow.
I understand Mix 1–4 are available as output routing options, but if I am correct, these are not suitable for external FX routing because:
- Mix 1-4 buses in dspMixFx are not latency-compensated in Cubase, which causes phase issues and timing discrepancies, especially when using parallel processing or inserts.
- Mix 1-4 buses may contain blended sources (e.g., direct input + DAW playback), which compromises signal purity and causes unpredictable results.
- Cubase’s External FX plugin does not recognize Mix buses for automatic delay compensation, which is essential in a professional insert workflow.
Is there workaround or something I’m missing?
If not, I’m requesting that Steinberg/Yamaha consider updating the UR824 USB driver and dspMixFx software to:
- Expose DAW Out 17–24 as routable outputs in both Cubase and dspMixFx when multiple UR824 units are cascaded
- Allow these additional DAW Outs to be used for clean, latency-compensated external FX routing
This would allow users with full 24-channel UR824 systems to utilize all available I/O and greatly enhance workflow for hybrid mixing.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Ray
