Hi all,
I suspect this is some kind of bug. My formatting with the Master Pages keeps changing - the text frames move around and expand. I’m hoping (assuming?) that there’s an error in how I’ve set this up, so I’m hoping that I can change some setting or alter how I’m placing the text frame so that it stays put going forward.
This is happening with both my score and parts master pages. Sometimes they’re moved entirely off the page, and if I try to drag them back onto the page, they immediately snap back into position. This is where I start to think that it’s actually a bug, since I don’t see how I could be doing anything to throw the frames of the Master Pages off screen when I’m not even messing with the Master Page.
Since the issue is it changing when I’m not intending a change to happen, I’m not sure what state I should send in?
Maybe I upload it when it’s messed up looking again?
There are no known bugs in this area, so my suspicion is that you have a mismatch between the properties of your frames and their constraints. We’ll be able to see what’s up if you attach your project here.
OK, here it is. I can see that in its current state, the Flute 1 part has already gotten messed up once again. The master page is all messed up, with text frames starting at the edge of the margins and proceeding off the page.
What I’ve been finding is this seems to be what’s happening to the parts text frames, while the score text frames (which appear to be OK at the moment) are expanding downward into the middle of the page after working on the score for a bit.
Ah, this seems extremely likely. I was finding it difficult to reposition the text frames and still have the title centered, so I attempted to constrain them, but I think I’ve misunderstood how that function works because I never saw any effect when I clicked those locks regarding how the text frames would move or resize (which is what I thought the locks were for…?)
So, for example, a title frame at the top wants to be locked to the top, L and R, but not to the bottom. Instead of measuring the bottom all the way from the bottom margin, when the bottom lock is off you get a height control.
Do you mean that the top of the frame is locked to its distance from the edge, but the bottom can expand downwards? Because that was what I thought it would do. But then why have I been able to move the frame and resize it freely even when I have the locks engaged?
The locks only have an affect on different page sizes. So for instance if you set up for A4, but then change to Letter size, locked edges will go with the new page size, unlocked edges will retain their original height/width.
Frames will not change their size according to the amount of content.
Ok, so this…doesn’t seem relevant to my problem then? I have not been changing the page sizes of anything, and it appears like the locks are only relevant for handling page size alterations?
Why would my text frames be moving and resizing in the master pages when I’m not editing the master pages? What could I be doing that extends the lower boundary of this title text frame half way down the page while I’m just editing the music?
Mmhh… Nothing is the answer that comes to my mind
This is really really a matter of how the described frames in a page template get interpreted when the size of the page changes. Either you have been changing those (or different layouts in your project have different page sizes and you didn’t notice?) or this is a new Halloween bug
Well, that it might be different sizes on different layouts was a good idea to check - I DID when doing initial setup, change the page sizes. This was before I started inputting any music, and it hasn’t changed since, but the possibility that I may have inconsistently applied the change was certainly a possibility.
However, I just checked, all pages sizes are the correct one, and I haven’t touched that since starting the project.
Having cleared that up you appear to have made a real mess of the page templates - the Default looks like it’s trying to be a First Page and vice versa. And lots of the frames on the First are positioned off the page… I’d start over!
This is what I’m talking about though. It’s not like that when I fix them and hit apply. This happens when I’m not editing them at all, and I’m working on the music, and suddenly I see stuff like the Title in the middle of the music, or the layout name shoved off the edge of the page!
All I want it to do, is have the page number, layout name, and flow title, at the top of the page, of every page. That did require making some changes from the default (which is only page number and layout name on the non-first pages, and only layout name and project title on the First pages), but that was all I wanted to change. And something is clearly messed up when I’m able to get that to look correct for awhile, and then they just change while I’m doing something else!
This is super strange then, because I specifically made sure I posted it when it looked messed up. Check out the parts. Flute 1 somehow has its own unique set of glitches compared to all the other parts, but ALL of the parts have their text frames in janky positions. The score does look OK at the moment, but it too will have the master page change things up sometimes, as my original screen shot showed.
