Delete audio without shifting

pretty much a noob here. I wanted to split my kick drums out onto their own track (was on laptop away from gear), and thought I could duplicate the track and delete the audio, but I cannot stop the audio from shifting left.

Running windows 11, cubase 13-le

  1. start with range selection

  2. push backspace or edit/delete

And you can see the audio shifts left. My understanding is that is expected with this function / feature. then I looked into the delete-time method

  1. select a range selection (image as above)
  2. edit/range/delete time

I am not sure what happened under delete time. it looks to close the audio editor window with no affect.

I guess two questions

  1. how do you delete audio without shifting (or is it not possible)
  2. what is the purpose of delete time feature, am I misunderstanding it?

In your first two screenshots, you are actually editing the audio in the sample editor. In that case, deletion will actually delete all the samples selected.
To do what you want, you need to apply the same to the audio events in the project window: select range tool in the top tool bar, select a range of the audio event on the track and hit delete. This will create “free space”.

There is a whole chapter in the manual about range editing:
