Delete or Hide rest marks in Dorico Pro 5

How to delete rest marks in Dorico Pro 5
How to hide rest marks in Dorico Pro 5

I have extra rest marks in my score from additional note layers in each stave. On a Mac OS, how do I hide or delete these additional rest markings so they’re no longer taking up space in an effort to have a cleaner looking score. I have provided an example in the picture below of what I am looking for.

Select the rests and choose Edit > Remove Rests.

Sorry, I strongly disagree with this. Scaling them down in this case is not the best solution.

Remove Rests is perfectly fine and can be easily reversed if needed.

All that Remove Rests does is to apply ends voice and starts voice properties at the appropriate places. To replace them, just make a selection, filter>notes and chords and reset the starts/ends voice properties.

I still haven’t received a straight answer from anyone on how to hide those rests that clutter up my score. I haven’t found a video on it either. In Finale it’s easy to do. All you have to do in finale is click on the rest and press “H” on the keyboard. Isn’t there something like that in Dorico that makes it easy to do?

@StevenJones01 gave you very clear instructions in the first reply to your post.

Also, I suspect that turning on voice colors and learning to use voices more carefully might prevent the rests from appearing to begin with.

Also it’s often easier to select a whole passage, notes and all.
Edit > Remove Rests works on just the rests and leaves the notes alone.

Just to make sure the OP understands that the answer was given and many times, there is no “delete rests” command or “hide rests”. It is called Remove rests in the Dorico jargon.

@Lillie_Harris who created our excellent Dorico manual, has equivalent or similar words recognized in the search process as much as possible.

Here is the help manual:
https://www.steinberg.help

If you use [“delete” or “hide” or “remove” rests] it should find the relevant information.
Many of the Finale (Sibelius etc.) terms would be already accommodated in the metadata and this process is on-going.

Awesome. Thanks for the link. Learning Dorico this week has been interesting. I dedicated a considerable amount of time this week manually inputting my SATB choral arrangement into Dorico that originally put into finale a week ago. So far I’ve worked a bunch of the kinks in the learning curb but this hiding extra rests business has gotten me in a roadblock, even attempting that which others have said in this thread.

Just to clarify: are you saying that after selecting those measures then applying Edit > Remove rests… they are still there?

@GeorgeMaster Hmmm, I wonder if you are using too many voices?
Do you know the difference between V and Shift-V? I would think all you need is to use Shift-V for the second voice, thereafter V to swap between them. If you add more Voices than necessary you can end up with rests for that voice.

[As you might know already, we do not often need to type in rests, just move to where you want to add in the next note (for that voice), the rests are automatically created.]

Thank you. That works.:man_technologist:t4::+1:t4:

Remove rests seems to remove ALL rests, not just the ones introduced in secondary voices.

Only select the rests you want removed.

(and you can’t re-enter the rests after removing them!)

Yes you can. From the bar you want rests to appear, just find the previous note of the voice in question. With it selected, in the properties panel, click off “ends voice” and your rests should appear after the note in that voice.

A suggestion which might be helpful for novices like myself is to establish a key command (eg shift/opt/R) to simplify rest removal.

You can create your own if you choose.
