Hi Bob!
Which Cubase version (Element, Artist etc) do you refer to? I once opened a demp project on C13 pro and it worked just fine. I am not sure though if there were audio tracks at all.
Can you open other projects/work with Cubase? In other words, is your setup up and running in general?
Thanks for taking the time !
I’m running Cubase 14 PRO.
I opened ONE project (the one that came with the Cubase 14 install by Dom Sigalas but didn’t load wav files and didn’t play sound). Now when I boot Cubase it freezes with the error message “CreateWicBitmapRender”
I have a support ticket in and think it has something to do with graphics card.
Anyway I can’t try any other Projects yet until this is fixed. So I can’t respond yet to your question if I can open other projects. I will though when I get this other problem fixed.
Best,
Bob
Hi Bob,
I don’t like to be the bearer of bad news but a support ticket usually takes months (plural). There are two alternatives: Try telephone support (depending on your location) or post your problem here (very good option).
A wild guess: You are using an nVIDIA graphic card with the latest driver suite installed. Please download and install the Studio Driver - that is a very common and known issue.
If this doesn’t solve your problem please post more specs like computer, OS, audio interface and graphic card. If you have crashdump files please attach them so that we can narrow down the culprit. You can find them here:
Windows: C:/Users/Name/Documents/Steinberg/Crashdumps
Mac: macOS Console utility > Crash Reports (or ~user/Library/Logs/Diagnostic Reports)]
Well I went to nVIDIA and downloaded/installed the latest Studio Driver. It wouldn’t install saying not compatible with Thinkpad.
So… I tried the nVIDIA Studio Driver lists (2024). It too was incompatible.
My computer repair jock is taking a look and I’m awaiting his input.
If he can’t figure it out I will post my Crashdumps if I can.
I sure hope Cubase 14 can play nicely in my Stinkpad, as I just upgraded the system C: drive for that sole purpose. Will be a shame if CB 14 PRO just can’t run on a Thinkpad W520.
Best,
Bob
Saga continues,
Bob
I’m afraid your Laptop might not meet the minimal system requirements
Who knows, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you get your
up and running with C14. Maybe the saga will have a happy end
Thanks for the suggestion. I didn’t see anything leap out that the Thinkpad W520 doesn’t meet (albeit long in the tooth).
Anything I might be missing (checking 1440x900 resolution right now) ?
Just got off with Nvidia support. Changed some stuff in Nvidia Control Center, rebooted, same result.
I think I may just kiss off CB 14 and go back to a downlevel. I KNOW a prior version was working on this very laptop with no problems-
but might have been as old as CB 8 which was sufficient for my purposes on a portable. I’d just figured what the heck I have an additional
CB14 license, why not use it ?
Now I gotta figure out how, if possible, to download a prior version. I have an eLicensor dongle but haven’t kept up with it and may not be
necessary now with the online system ?
If I ever do have success you’ll be the first to know…
Best,
Bob
Hi Bob,
I’m afraid it is highly unlikely that C14 will run smoothly on your laptop. Looking at the specs, the Thinkpad W520 misses (2nd Intel Gen. CPU) or barely meets the minimum system requirements… I would definetly go for the Cubase 8 route.
Since you own a USB dongle that’s no problem. Just download the version of your choice, for example Cubase 8.5
and the latest eLicenser Control Center
You can download any former version and content from Steinberg. Just make sure that your dongle doesn’t break or get lost.
Have fun with Cubase, maybe it’s nice to run both an old version of Cubase on the laptop and the latest version on another rig.
Enjoy !
