Device control in dorico 5

I’m slogging my way through the “first steps” lesson and reached the playback section, where it tells me to uncheck some box in a device control dialog box to take away Dorico’s exclusive control of my audio output. I’m assduming that this mayu have something to do with the mysterious and sudden failure of audio to function in Finale.
I followed the directed path, to the place where it says I should uncheck “Allow ASIO host application to take exclusive control of selected
port configuration.”
When I get to the directed place, there’s nothing like that in the dialog box.
Is it me, or is it Dorico?
Thanks.

Hi Will. Isn’t this a Windows thing? Maybe you have a Mac?

As Marc already mentioned, that option only exists on Windows, so if you are on a Mac that is irrelevant. And if indeed you are on Windows, then the advice is a little bit outdated, because only together with the Generic Low Latency ASIO driver it was pertinent. Since recently Dorico comes with the new Steinberg Built-in ASIO driver, which you should use by default, and which does not require that option any more either.

Windows.

Does Steinberg/Dorico monitor this forum? Perhaps they should consider fixing the “First Steps” instruction book to reflect reality.

If a user avatar has a little Steinberg logo in it, they are devs…

Yes, from time to time we do monitor the Dorico forum. I’d say at least every 24 hours.
But point taken, we should indeed update the onboarding guidelines.

Not necessarily devs. It means they are working for Steinberg in whatever role.
But certainly they are here for you to help you

I wanted to make the point as clearly as possible…

Thank you.

While you’re at it, you should also take a look at the First Steps presentation of Playback Templates, which bears no resemblance to what’s in the latest Dorico Pro version. In fact, you probably ought to have someone on your staff share the user experience in search of other similar problems.

I probably don’t need to tell you this, but a reminder can’t hurt: These kinds of glitches are frustrating and time-consuming, particularly for a new user who’s already frustrated enough and growing steadily more impatient. Also doesn’t do much for one’s faith in your program.

There are indeed plans to review older tutorials as well as creating new ones in the playback area. Stay tuned
