Different rastral sizes for page and galley views?

I’m working on an arrangement for nonet. I would like to have a small rastral size for page view (say, 3.7mm) and a “normal” size for galley view (6mm). Is that possible? Thanks—Peter

I don’t think so – but can’t you accomplish what you want just by zooming in a little in galley view?

You can create one extra layout for entering the music where you set a higher Rastral size, and work from that. I am not sure though, if Rastral size affects galley view at all.

Thanks asherber— Well, it’s more than “a little,” but sure. But then the zoom changes for both galley and page view. (I’m aware of the key command for quickly accessing custom zoom values FWIW.) Different zooms levels in galley mode and page mode were one of my longstanding wishes for Finale (I’m a refugee. Never happened. The fact is, when I’m writing (usually in galley mode), I want the music to be fairly large; in page view I’m more interested in the big picture. So I’d call this a feature request—different zooms for different views.

Thanks LAE—I’m just getting into layouts; new to Dorico. If you’d be so kind, can you elaborate? Can I work in one layout in galley mode and another in page mode?

These are views, not modes. Galley view is just showing all the instruments as a continuous line (rather like a piano roll with proper notation!). Page view shows how will look on the page.

You will need Galley view if you are condensing a layout, because you cannot edit musical material on a condensed stave in Page view. Many of us prefer to use Galley view for all note entry…

Thanks, that’s what I thought. I was responding to LAE’s suggestion that I could create a different layout and I was asking if I could switch layouts when I switch between galley and page views. Nevertheless, simply being able to set a different view zoom for the two views would solve this for me.

Sure, I have similar tendencies.

For me, it’s no big deal to zoom in and out with the Z and X shortcut keys. @LAE has suggested a second layout, which would also work. You can think of a layout sort of like a part in Finale. In Setup mode, on the right-hand side, right click on your Full Score layout and choose Duplicate Layout. Then you can go into Layout Options and change the rastral size for just that layout, and use the layout picker in the top toolbar to switch between the two score layouts. (Yes, you can keep one in page view and one in galley view.) Is switching layouts easier/faster than zooming? Up to you.

Finally, you could consider sticking with just a single full score layout but using a second tab (“document window” in Finale) showing the same layout. Keep one tab in galley view, zoomed in, and the other in page view, zoomed out. If I weren’t fine with zooming, I would probably do things this way.

Terrific info, Aaron—thanks so much!
