Different Staff directions - Conductor and Instrument views

Hi everyone,

I’m struggling on working with different voices on Piano writing (NB : I’m using at this moment Dorico for iPad).

I writed and created the voices in conductor mode, and had sometimes to flip the staff manually : indeed, in this example, I wrote a 5-parts harmony but for a better visibility, I created 4 voices in total (two on Bass key with 2 notes taking the 2nd voice and two voices in Treble key with one note for each).

I am satisfied with the result in conductor view however, when I switch to Piano view, the staffs’ directions are inverted and I have to re-flip manually the staff’s direction in Piano view which is time-consuming.

I am a new user and apparently can upload only one media content. I uploaded the Piano view ; please consider that in conductor view, on first chord of first bar in the treble key, the B is with top staff, Eb with bottom staff (same deal with Bass key).

Any advice for fixing this ?

Many thanks for your help.

Welcome to the forum @JMOR

There are two key things going on here:

  1. To change the stem direction of notes in a multi-voice context, you’d be better off making sure that your voices start with the appropriate up-stem or down-stem identification. For example, in bar 1 on the top staff, put the Gs in up-stem voice 1, and the Eb and D in down-stem voice 1. That way, their stems will point in the right direction automatically, in all layouts.
(Making sure notes are in the most appropriate voice from the outset is the best and most reliable way of handling stem directions.)
  1. Flipping stem directions is a local setting, meaning it can be different in each layout. If you know you want this sort of change to affect the part, make sure the Property scope is set to “globally” before flipping stems.

Hello @Lillie_Harris,

Thank you so much for your prompt and very clear reply, as well as your warm welcome, indeed the direction stem identification was wrong, now it is fixed =)

Have a lovely day,
jmo
