Different versions of same score and parts: how to?

Hi all,

I’d like to create two “versions” of my score and parts. The two versions will be identical, except for front matter and catalogue number at the footer of each page (indicating printed version or PDF version).

What is the right approach to do this in Dorico?

Many thanks for any suggestions!

  • Duplicate all layouts in Setup Mode.
  • Duplicate both template sets in Engrave Mode.
  • Edit the First template of the duplicated sets respectively and specify a different token – for example the other info token – in the footer text field
  • Enter the front matter and catalogue number in the project info dialog into the field according to the different token.
  • Change the template sets for the other version, you have to change the set in the duplicated score and all duplicated parts.

There is one pitfall: Changing things related to layout options (page size, note and frame spacing etc.) doesn’t synchronize between the duplicated layouts unlike the music and the notation and engraving option related items.

I still do most front matter in DTP software, and combine PDFs from that and from Dorico.

If one puts the PDF “Front Matter” at the end of the file, one can always replace the non-PDF front matter in a PDF editor, and one can limit the printed (?) version to leave out the final pages or layouts to leave out the final pages.

When I did something like this in the past, I had a separate layout that only included the title and front matter. I added it at the end of the file in order not to disturb layouts created earlier and added it to the start of the PDF in a PDF editor before sending the file to the print shop.

One could temporarily change the print code footer for the PDF version in Project Info temporarily prior to printing and then change it back rather than creating parallel layouts for every instrument.

This is the way…

If you want make it easier, I guess you could create an additional “Front Matter” page template and just “Insert Page Template Change” over those leading pages as needed. You’d have to make sure the number of pages for each version of the front matter is identical, but if they are, it shouldn’t affect the flow of the score beyond that point. I’ve done this a couple of times.

Thanks, everyone, for all your input. It’s much appreciated!
