Difficult rhythmic spelling

In notation options, I have chosen to disallow dotted rests, and to divide rests according to the beats, but I’m still having trouble with 3/2 meters.

I find the first quarter rest is awkward to read, and I’d prefer not to have a dotted quarter as well. If I change the meter to 6/4, I get the rhythmic spelling I would prefer.

However, 6/8 is not 3/4, and 3/2 is not 6/4, and this section is in 3/2. How can I get the rhythmic spelling I’m looking for? Thanks.

Hi @home4ward, your screenshots are not being displayed. Can you try re-uploading them?

Here is what I see:

hope that’s better now. Thanks

HI @home4ward, thank you for re-uploading the screenshots.

  • You could use a 6:6q tuplet (six quarter in place of six quarters), for the first bar (you can then hide the tuplet and its bracket, and you need to split some beams). For the subsequent bars you can then use a hidden 6/4 TS:

    3-2 vs 6-4.dorico (1.4 MB)
If you need this only for some staves, you can set the hidden 6/4 as local TS for the needed staves (pressing Option(Alt) while confirming the popover with Enter) while the other saves continue in 3/2.

  • Alternatively just enter the eight rests using Force Duration:

I wasn’t aware of Forced Duration (Shortcut O). That works well for me. Thanks very much
