Look at Logic Pro X. They handled it so well.
This would be so much faster than going into the mixer or even the lower zone.
And the inspector is not really handled well because you can always see only one channel at a time.

Now to your request. A little fader which we can use in the track control settings would actually be nice 
We should be able to costumize the lenght of it. And scrolling with the mouswheel over it should also work.
If I understand your suggestion correctly you probably should activate the “Fader” function that is available in the Setup Inspector menu. I know you said that you can see only one at a time in the inspector but… seems good to me.
