Disable CTRL+N for New Score Possible?

I’m constantly finding myself slightly missing my SHIFT key and hitting my CTRL key for N. This wouldn’t be such a huge deal if the keyboard shortcut did something mundane. However… in this circumstance, it seems to crash Dorico 100% of the time. (As in, both the score I was working in as well as the “new” score window report that they are “not responding”), causing me to need to recover whatever I was working on, find where the file was saved, replace that file, etc. It ends up costing me about 2 minutes of time.

The number of times per hour I need to make a new score is approximately zero, and if it approached 1, I would easily be able to hit File → New… and even then I would never do that because 100% of the time I want a score from a template, rather than a blank score.

So all that said, is it possible to just disable the CTRL+N keyboard shortcut given it’s proximity to arguably the most useful keyboard shortcut, SHIFT+N?

Welcome to the forum, mkingsbu.

Go to Edit > Preferences, then to the Key Commands section:

Remove the Key Command, Apply and Close. That should do it.

:rocket::rocket::rocket::rocket::rocket: Thank you so much that worked perfectly!!!

Just creating a second score should not cause a crash, so there might be something else going on; like third-party VSTs causing problems, or the murky world of Windows audio drivers.

You can also use Enter or double-click to start note entry.

I’m not sure what this Preference is set to by default, but it’s worth considering:

If subsequent projects are set to Activate on load, that means that any time you create a new project (or open an additional project) Dorico’s loading all of the playback VSTs for that project, and that takes time and processing bandwidth. Switching focus to the previously loaded project then forces Dorico to unload the new/additional project’s playback stuff and reload the playback stuff for the previously loaded project.

If you tell Dorico not to activate subsequent projects on load, switching between (and copying and pasting between) multiple projects can be much quicker and much more stable. And if you want playback, activate whichever project at a time that suits you.

All is possible, but… I seem to remember that the shortcut Shift+N calls up inputting notes. Won’t it harm your interface to replace Ctrl+N with this shortcut ? How will you then call up the input entry ?
Of course, as Ben says, we can press the enter key or double-click to enter in the note input, but….

Haha, you’re not alone on this – it happens to me on occasion when working quickly and/or I’ve had too much coffee and I’m feeling a bit trigger-happy on the keyboard  Every time it happens I feel the same way, an almost never-likelihood I am going to create new projects with the frequency to necessitate a keyboard shortcut. Good idea to simply remove it!
