I’ve been using Cubase Pro since version 8, and upgraded to 11. I’m nearing the end of my trial period for Cubase Pro 14, which is a definite improvement over 11, so I was looking forward to upgrading even if the upgrade cost is $250.
What sucks is seeing there is a NAMM Deal going on, which looks to be 25% off the full version, as well as the Crossgrade. Why is there no discount for existing customers who would like to upgrade?
I own Logic and Ableton as well, so for $19 more I could get into Cubase 14 compared to someone who has been a customer for years. I don’t want to assume mal-intent on Steinberg’s end, but this seems like a huge miss from the team to look after their existing customers.
I don’t mean to rant here, but I would like to kindly suggest that in the future, discounts made to the crossgrade license should also apply to upgrade licenses.
Updating from three versions ago for $250 is how SB shows their support for new customers. They do all kinds of sales and promos throughout the year, so maybe wait?
I only scoped out deals during the holidays, and Cubase 14 wasn’t part of that sale from Steinberg. This isn’t out of character for Steinberg since 14 is relatively new. I’m sure other deals will be offered in the coming months, it’s just disappointing that the upgrade isn’t much cheaper than the crossgrade at the moment, that’s all.
But you do. Especially when using the word “hate” in your title. You could have used “indifferent”, “neglectful”, “not caring” but you chose to use an extreme word.
I find it very sad that you don’t consider changing the wording of the title. You ask Steinberg to change their ways, I ask you to change yours - seems to be the same result in the end.
No they don’t. They’ve had loads of deals. I upgraded to Cubase Pro 13 last year at a deal price then was able to upgrade to Dorico Pro for 50% off. I’ve used Cubase for years, Elements and Artist and have usually upgraded and bought instruments during a sale. The forums have helpful staff responses particularly the Dorico forum. Its worth checking in with the forums regularly as you’ll get the announcements about sales and updates.
@SuperG I think the discount for existing users offer is not showing in the NAAM link (presumably because it is for attracting new users coming from NAAM) whereas the discount does show after clicking from the normal Cubase page which is what @Progfather was wanting to find (I think).
I have only been using Steinberg products since Dorico v1 (2016) and since then been enticed into WaveLab, SpectraLayers, Nuendo, Cubase (I’m just about to upgrade to v14 myself, been waiting for this offer).
Overall I am very pleased with the upgrade sales cycles, although sometimes I jump in to purchase a new update without waiting for any sale.
I find Nuendo more expensive (obviously) compared to Cubase and its additional features no longer useful for my purposes, so purchased Cubase v12 a few years ago to continue upgrades instead. I’ll return to Nuendo at some point if I need to.
I guess the question I am trying to make is: Why isn’t Steinberg throwing the same bone to existing customers as they are to those using a competing DAW? If I didn’t own Cubase, I’d take advantage of the Crossgrade with my other DAW licenses. It’s a fantastic price.
Thank you for spelling out entitlement. I’ll add that to my word of the day.
What I see is -25% for new customers (first tab), but the same discount isn’t applied under the Updates & upgrades tab. I’ll end up purchasing the upgrade at full price which is fine, but it would have been cool to see that discount also applied here.
Ah, I see. Sorry for the insufficient information then @Progfather as I did not follow it through (I was looking for my v13 to v14 discount at the time of answering.)
You sound reasonably comfortable with the upgrade (as am I with mine) … or we can wait for the next round of discounts!
In general I am happy with the price for upgrades keeping in mind the new features that are added, bug fixes etc. Software development is very expensive, what we see is what they decided on and what worked, the result. We do not see all the convoluted planning, trialing, coding, (trashing), testing that takes place to get to that point.
Hate is a four-letter word. Of course, Steinberg does not hate its customers. They are in the business for profit and to pay their employees and developers. There are much less ethical businesses out there, trust me!
It is not fair that the discount is not applied to an update from cubase 13 pro and if it is done to a crossgrade from another daw. At least he is not very kind to those who pay annually. They should offer the discount to everyone. Even more so when Cubase 14 is full of bugs
They had a sale recently that included Cubase updates, and right now there’s a sale on other product updates. (Dorico)
Steinberg has promos almost non-stop.
Also, I will point out that as customers we do not have an entitlement to discounts, and there’s really no question of fairness involved.
Vote with your wallet, is what I say. If you don’t like the pricing here, show how you feel in the most meaningful way there is, your purchasing power.
