DMX Editor experience: bugs and much needed functionalities & ideas how to do it

Hi @Spork ,

i’ve been editing DMX on VSTLive the past couple of months, i have to program DMX on 24 songs 2hr and 40 minutes setlist… after a while i feel confident enought to make suggestions to improove the user experience.

While VSTLive is not intended as a complete editor for audio and midi, for the DMX side instead there isn’t any other complete editor sequencer/daw like it is DMX in VSTLive, so VSTLive IS the main editor for DMX, and we cannot rely on 3rd party software to edit it then import it like we do for audio and midi (except if we program chases and moving effects on 3rd party software and ther record figures on VSTLive but it’ not a daw-like programming…) … so here’s my ideas.

  • Track view: make all the events on a selected dmx track visible in the editor. I have tracks with many small events and is difficult to follow if i have to click on every event while trasport is running to visualize the dmx graphs… just let me see discoloured the not selected events and highlited the selected and editable one.

  • Make the bottom lane draggable resizable in height , now it’s fixed but sometimes you nee dto make small adjustments and bigger is better.

  • Add a vertical Snap to button in tool bar examples: Snap to 0 and snap to 255 when you place a point <10 or >245 (difficult to put by hand. Snap to 10 pts grid) this should be on off like the current horizoontal snap to tempo.

  • Add a “hand” tool in tool bar , to Move horizzontally the selection in the same channel (folows time snap on off)

  • Add a Copy, PASTE and PASTE TO CHANNEL in tool bar… (with a popup diag box to insert channel number)… that is self explanatory

  • BUG: it seems that placing a point with zero value (often result in 2 to 5 value because of no snap to zero tool), and then to be sure, editing the point on the tool bar to set ZERO in value, don’t result in zero being effectively set. I need to open the dmx list editor and select zero from the value drop down menu to see the fixtures effectively goes to zero. I see this as a strobo channel on a fixture, if a place a zero on the lane (always results in 2 to 5 channel value because of no snap to zero) and then write zero in the tool bar, the fixture still strobos very slowly (like at 2 to 5 value, the one i clicked when i placed the point at first. It oly stops stroboing when zero selected from drop down in dmx editor list.

Hope we can have this improovements soon, theese are time saving features much needed!!

Ciao, Ciro.

Thanks a lot @ciro1983811, you described here a lot of the improvements I was thinking of after spending hours to program our shows (only 1h30 long and 12 songs )
I won’t add more requests not to confuse more the wonderful VST LIVE team, if the @ciro1983811 requests are taking care of I would be the happiest man! thanks again everyone!

@Spork Oooohhhhh just came to mind another very useful toolbar button that could be added. “Invert selection values”!!!

Sometimes i need to do “cross” transitions from red to blue passing by violet. Or, flashing lights in quarters values between violet and green… all example in witch one channel need to move exactly inversely of another.

In this case, copy a channel to another channel, then a click button to “inverse selection” would do it (0=255 , 255=0 and all inbetween) !!

Cool! Ciao!
