Do rehearsal marks have a circle enclosure by default? (Dorico 5.0.20 Pro Trial)

Hi Dorico staff / users / community,

I’m new here with Dorico 5.0.20 Pro Trial version, coming from Capella (9) (since 29 years) and MuseScore 4

I left MuseScore some weeks ago after joining it with a pro account (since autumn 2022) because of inconsistencies with their new ‘muse-hub’ running in background and damaging my Windows system and due to uncertain security issues with using torrenting, Yandex etc.

So, I get to know the Trial of Dorico 5.0.20 Pro since Monday 25th Sept 2023 this week.

In June this year, I composed a piece for 3 clarinets and now I’m trying to manually put in the Score after I was not satisfied with my xml import results from MuseScore 4 and also from Capella 9.

:one: I noticed, that when I try to put in a rehearsal mark in Dorico 5.0.20 Pro Trial version, I cannot remove the circle enclosure type around it even if I try to change it the engraving options (strg+shift+e / engraving options / rehearsal marks).

So I cannot display it with ‘no enclosure’, it seems to have a ‘circle enclosure’ by default and when I try to change the enclosure type e.g. to rounded rectangle, it shows both, circle and rectangle around the letter.

I tried it several times, closed and reopened the program, but the issue persists.
(My favorite project text font is Candara.)

Perhaps you can help me or tell me if this is a known issue? I searched in the forum but didn’t find a specific hint so far.

Perhaps you can also give me advice

:two: how to create a key command for breath marks instead of using popovers or the mouse and

:three: if it’s possible to use the Trial Version of Dorico 5 Pro together with the Trial Version of Noteperformer 4 (without additional libraries), or if I would have to get the full paid version of Dorico Pro 5 first to run the Noteperformer 4 Trial version?

Thank you so much in advance and kind regards,

Tilman (from Germany)

Perhaps the circle is an XML artifact from the MuseScore export. What options have you chosen for opening XML in the Preferences section of Dorico?

Tilman,

This might be the solution to the problem:
See Library>Paragraph Styles>Rehearsal marks:
There is a border selected.

Jan is absolutely right with the solution to your rehearsal marks issue.

To create a key command for breath marks, you’ll need to use a text editor. In Windows Explorer, go to %APPDATA%\Steinberg\Dorico 5, and you should find a file called keycommands_de.json in there (or possibly keycommands_en.json if you’re running in English). Open this in a plain text editor.

In the kMusicEditable section, add an entry for the following:

NoteInput.CreatePause?Definition=breathmarkcomma&UseLocalOverride=0

If you have any trouble doing this, do Help > Create Diagnostic Report and attach the resulting zip file here, and I’ll add the entry for you.

You can indeed use the trial version of NotePerformer with your Dorico trial.

Thank you very much for your appreciated assistance, Jan!

Yes, I was in the library menue shortly and forgot that I changed settings there, so I expected to find the solution the engraving options instead of in the library.

I still will have to learn a lot about Dorico. But I already have the impression that it will be worth it.

Thank you very much for your appreciated assistance, Daniel.
I will try to do so. :+1: and look forward to get to know more about Dorico.

PS
I’m sorry , but I cannot find a file ‘keycommands_en.json’ or ‘keycommands_de.json’
(currently ‘English’ is running)

Screenshot of the %APPDATA%\Steinberg\Dorico 5 folder content:

The Dorico Diagnostics.zip is 6.58 MB so I unfortunately cannot upload it here because of the upload size limit to 4MB.

Could it be a solution to uninstall/reinstall Dorico 5 from scratch in order to find the keycommand file?

Thank you again and best regards.

(It’s not an urgency)

Thank you very much for your appreciated answer, Derrek. :+1:

I tried to import some of my scores with different settings and probably will have to try some other settings as well. I guess the problem is that I made changes like manual system brakes and manual alignment changes in the other programs, but I guess it will be better anyway to put in my around 100 scores from scratch into Dorico, I did the same when I joined MuseScore last year, and it will be a good opportunity to get deeper into the training of the use of Dorico.

Tilman, you don’t have a key commands JSON file yet because I guess you’ve not customised any key commands in Dorico at all as yet. If you go to the Key Commands page of Preferences and set a key command, even one you don’t really need (e.g. a shortcut to open the About Dorico window), that will create the file.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your very remarkable commitment.

I set an ‘About Dorico’ key command and 3 others in the “Preferences/Key Commands”,
for “start note input” and “lower pitch by octave”, “raise pitch by octave”.

I’m sorry, I don’t have programming knowledge and don’t know how to exactly put in
NoteInput.CreatePause?Definition=breathmarkcomma&UseLocalOverride=0
into the syntax. Because ‘Dorico Diagnostic.zip’ exceeds 4 MB, I have zipped and attached the keycommands_de.json file here.

The other way is certainly to use popover “ctrl+h+,” for setting a breath mark comma.
So, it would even be ok to leave it that way.

Best regards and thank you again, I’m happy to learn more about “Dorico” step by step.
Tilman

keycommands_de.zip (365 Bytes)

Sorry for the delay in coming back to you, Tilman. Here’s an updated keycommands_de.json file:

keycommands_de.json.zip (978 Bytes)

Before you replace this in your Dorico 5 application data folder, open it in a text editor if you want to change the shortcut assigned to the breathmark: I’ve used § for the time being (replacing your shortcut for the About Dorico window).

Daniel,

thank you so much for your prompt help :+1:

I guess it will be possible to set some other key commands in the program’s preferences and that this would not change the manual insert you have made.

I have posted an issue in the German forum and would be very happy if it would be possible not too far in future to playback all standard ornaments, as I was used to from Capella and MuseScore.

https://forums.steinberg.net/t/triller-aber-kein-doppelschlag-mordent-playback/871488/3?u=tilman_fricke

I deliberately left MuseScore, even though I had put a lot of energy into it and already had a nice little 35-follower community there.

Thank you again for your perfect assistance and I wish you success with all business.
Tilman

Yes, you can set your own key commands via the Preferences dialog without fear of undoing the special key command I added for you.

Regarding playback of ornaments, this is certainly something we plan to add in future.
