Does Anybody Use VST Connect Successfully?

I was considering purchasing VST Connect Pro but for obvious reasons that will become apparent below, I definitely will not because the software is CURRENTLY NOT RELIABLE. :rage:

After spending 3 hrs configuring VST Connect on my side (in Cubase 13 as VST Connect SE) as well as for the remote performer using (VST Connect Performer), I must admit that I am NOT IMPRESSED with the implementation. It is definitely NOT INTUITIVE. :open_mouth:

The first issue I had was that I had to delete all of my existing Cue Sends in the Control Room so that VST Connect could create its own Cue. This was not well explained in the documentation but I managed to figure this out. OK done, let’s move on to the next step …

Next, I created the Talkback channel and Performer track using the options in the menu: VST Cloud / VST Connect SE / …
OK done, let’s continue …

After this I attempted to establish a connection with the performer using the generated key, but to no avail, since the VST Connect Performer (latest version from yesterday!) continually crashed.

Then I asked the performer to create a MySteinberg account with email and password, which they did and then they successfully logged in to VST Connect Performer.
Again, this was no an intuitive process but I did manage to find the user in the so-called “Buddy View” (btw cringe, this is not a good name) .
It is very difficult to actually enter the performer’s name into the search box, this SHOULD BE IMPROVED!

But alas I did find the performer and added this “Friend” and then in the “Friends” tab I finally discovered that I have to right-click the name and then select “Connect to Friend”. Again not intuitive, but I managed to find the option. Here we go … right?!?

Wrong … this connection attempt launched and I eagerly watched as the connection “percentage” went from 10% to 30% … until once again … CRASH!
Cubase froze on my side and VST Connect Performer also crashed on the performer. Not good.

SUMMARY: This software is not reliable!

MY QUESTION TO STEINBERG:
Are these issues known and. if yes, when will they be rectified?

MY QUESTION TO OTHER USERS:
Is anyone else able to use this software reliably?

Sorry for my exasperated tone, but this was indeed a very frustrating experience. And to top it all off the Steinberg Download Assistant is also crashing constantly today, so there is no way to check for updates to VST Connect.

Hi @themancable,

I am sorry to hear your experience. Far way to many crashes. Can you give us the crash-reports from Cubase and the Performer? Then we can have a look what’s going on.

Thank you,
Michael.

Thanks for the help Spork!

I checked the CrashDumps folder and there is no crash dump there from today. The crash was so severe that I had to use the good old Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then close Cubase from the Task Manager.

I am going to ask my performer for their crash dumps … it was on a Mac Powerbook, where should they look to find those files? I only know my way around Windows.

Best regards,
Robert Cummings

We tried again but it still did not work, it was the exact same crash as last time.
On my side (Cubase 13, Windows 10), there is no crash dump unfortunately but the following error message appears:

Note that it is not possible for me to actually click or to close this dialog. When I try to do this the VST Connect window comes to the front and is unresponsive and blocks access to the error message.

The error message from my performer is included below. This is simply a text file that I renamed with the *.crash ending, so please change the file ending to view it:

VST Connect Performer_Fehlerbericht.crash (81.8 KB)

… no chance to get the focus if you focus to another application and back to Cubase? But I’ll add it to the bug-base.

… it’s crashing while the VST Connect performer tries to connect. The macOS system (which is used) 10.13. I am not sure if we ever tested this OS system. Any chance that your Performer can try to connect on a newer macOS system?

/Michael.

Hi Robert, the easiest way on a mac is to open an app called Console.app
(hit command key + spacebar and type “console” into the pop up window)
All types of reports are listed on the left column, with Crash Reports listed at the top. If you select one and right click, there’s usually an option to Open in Folder.
