Does Dorico 5.1 have a preferred .xml format for import?

A newbie from Finale here. I’ve exported some .musx files to each of the .xml formats and it seems like any of the three import fine (with some ‘adjustments’ of course). Does Dorico recommend any particular format over the others? (.xml, .mxl, .musicxml). I’d like to know before I start batch converting files. Thanks for any help.

There are no differences in the xml content. An .mxl is just a zipped .xml. And I think .musicxml is just an alternative extension to the generic .xml.

Hello Peter and thank you for your response. I tried out the three file extensions and it seemed like they all imported fine so this is good information to know before I start batch converting Finale files. Thank you again. When exporting from Finale, it’s a good idea to use the .mxl compressed MusicXML format, both because it is smaller on disk, but also because it will (in Finale 27) include additional information about instrumental parts as well as the full score.

Dorico doesn’t currently import the formatting information from parts, but it’s something we may well support in future, so it’s a good idea to export the most complete MusicXML files you can.

Thank you, Daniel. You gotta like that .mxl makes smaller files as well as containing more information!

So, out of Finale, they are a bit different after all! That’s new to me.
