Does Profile Manager Fully Restore All Settings After a Reinstall?

Hello! I recently switched to Cubase. Could you please clarify what exactly the Profile Manager function saves?

I need to reinstall my system soon, which means I’ll be installing Cubase from scratch. Will the Profile Manager fully restore all the settings I’ve spent almost three days configuring?

Specifically:

  • track settings,
  • appearance,
  • toolbar configurations,
  • button placements,
  • MediaBay settings,
  • my plugin collections,
  • key commands,
  • macros, and everything else.

Or do I need to manually save some folders from AppData, ProgramData, My Documents, and so on?

Thank you for your advice!

Hi, everything is in the manual, quoting:

Profiles

Profiles allow you to save customized program settings and preferences. You can switch between profiles and import and export your profiles for use on different computers.

Profiles are helpful if you work on different computers, if you use different settings for different kinds of projects, or in a studio environment where several users work on the same computer. Profiles are saved as files with the file name extension .srf.

Profiles include the following:

  • Preferences
  • Toolbar settings for all windows
  • Global workspaces
  • Track control settings
  • Track control presets
  • Presets for input and output busses
  • File format presets
  • Plug-in collections
  • Quantize presets
  • Crossfade presets
  • Key commands

All changes applied to these settings are saved in the active profile.

Important

The following is not included in profiles: Settings in the Studio Setup dialog and in the Audio Connections window, presets on the Control Room tab of the Audio Connections window, track presets, plug-in presets, and project templates.

Track settings are not included, just the visibility settings.

Mediabay works across the entire range of products, so it’s not part of the profile as well.

@almaelectronix @st10ss Okay, so how can these settings be saved:

The following is not included in profiles: Settings in the Studio Setup dialog and in the Audio Connections window, presets on the Control Room tab of the Audio Connections window, track presets, plug-in presets, and project templates.

To avoid setting everything up again. Or is it impossible?

Would it be enough to save the entire folder located at - C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg? Or are there other folders that contain settings as well?

Plug-in presets, project templates, VST presets and track presets are stored in user (the logged-in user in the OS) related locations, save that to an external storage should enable provide access to these settings afterward.
The paths are written somewhere in the online manual.

Media Bay is difficult.

Good question, I’m not sure about it.

I remember some discussions about the backup and restore strategies, but don’t remember the topic title… a quick search didn’t help.

Let’s see if I can name all the folders where Cubase and MediaBay store user created files (either by saving them or by the users actions within Cubase) on a Windows system:

%appdata%/Steinberg
That is the short form of the folder that you mentioned yourself. It contains the bulk of your user settings.

C:\Users\{accountname}\AppData\Local\Steinberg
This is used by MediaBay

%userprofile%/documents/VST3 Presets
Your self-made VST3 presets

%userprofile%/documents/VST XMLs
For any VST3 plugin you can create your own Remote Control assignment with the Remote Control Editor

%userprofile%/documents/steinberg/
Amongst others this is the storage location for MIDI Remote, Drum Maps, PLE and LE presets.

C:\ProgramData\Steinberg\Audio Export Post Process Scripts
For the Audio Export Mixdown you can write little scripts. Those are stored here.

I am not claiming that this is the complete list but if you save a copy of all these folders, you should be able to have Cubase running on your new system just the same as on the old one - after installing all the software, of course.
