Dorico 3.1 Elements installation requires old, lost Dorico 2 Elements license code

Hi,

I have a license for Dorico 3.1 Elements which according to the eLicenser is valid for 4 installations.

I want to install Dorico 3.1 Elements on another, old, Mac for my daughter to use.
When I enter my license code, I’m told that it’s an upgrade code from Dorico 2 Elements, which couldn’t be located.

Unfortunately I’ve lost the email I received in Oct 2018 when I bought the full Dorico 2 Elements, and which I assume contained the license code.

Is it possible to recover the Dorico 2 Elements license some other way?
And would I need to first install that on my old Mac, and then install the upgrade to 3.1 Elements?

thanks,
Paul

Paul, I’m afraid I suspect you are mistaken about the number of computers on which you can install Dorico Elements. eLicenser-based licenses are only for a single computer, whether they are on a Soft-eLicenser or a USB-eLicenser hardware key.

I am also duty-bound to point out that single-user licenses are intended for the use of a single person, so according to the letter of the law, installing your license on another computer for the use of a different person (even your daughter) is not permitted by the EULA.

All that said, if you registered your license in MySteinberg, you can follow the reactivation workflow to get a replacement activation code that will allow you to move the activation to your other computer. If you currently have Dorico installed on the original machine, this will not disable the existing license there, but as far as our systems will be concerned, the “real” location for your license will then be the machine on which you have used your replacement activation code.

You can find details about the procedure here:

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for replying and for the clarifications. I attach a screenshot from my eLicenser and highlighted the text which led me to assume the license was good for 4 installs - I guess I misinterpreted that!

If I follow the reactivation workflow, will the replacement activation code still require a Dorico 2 license to be present, since I purchased Elements 3 as an upgrade? If so then I’d still have the issue of having lost the original license code.

thanks,
Paul

To be honest I’m not sure what “application-instances” is in this context. But to my knowledge we have never had an eLicenser-based license for Dorico that allows use on more than one computer.

Provided your existing Dorico Elements 3 license is registered in MySteinberg, you won’t need your original Dorico Elements 2 activation code. Try the reactivation workflow as described in the article I’ve linked above, and if you run into any problems, let me know.

It is also worth saying that the upgrade from Elements 3.1 to version 5 is currently on sale at £20. (So slightly more in $ or €.) You will gain a ton of new features.

That will also move you to the new licensing scheme – which DOES allow you 3 installations.

And the old licensing server is about to expire.

Hi Ben - thanks for the tip! I’ve decided to purchase Dorico 5 at the sale price. Now I can transfer the 3.1 license to the old computer my daughter uses.
