Dorico 5 – can't change sample rate

I’ve been running Dorico 5 on a Mac Pro under Monterey for a year or so without trouble.

Recently, the pitch randomly changes, and usually, a restart brings it back down. The system SR is always set to 48k as that’s the default elsewhere.

Dorico’s prefs show the SR at 44k1, and changing that to 48k doesn’t retain the setting, which has gone back to 44k1 when opening the prefs again. Now Dorico is permanently running sharp.

Hauptwerk (which operates at 48k) is running at the correct pitch.

Can anyone suggest a fix? I should say that there are no other apps running to hold the SR at 44k1.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Would you please do from Dorico’s menu Help > Create Diagnostics Report and attach the corresponding zip file to a reply here? Thanks

Thank you for this. Attached.

Hi @roderickelms , thanks for the data.

And what if you change line 14 in the file
/Users/{yourname}/Library/Application\ Support/Steinberg/Dorico\ 5/preferences.xml
to 48000? Does it not want to stick then?

Unfortunately, as soon as I opened Dorico, the preference changed back to 44k1, and I’m still unable to change to 48k in the programme. I’ve not changed anything on this Mac for a couple of months, and it’s broadly been ok until this past week.

Update – despite trying the other built-in output options (and notwithstanding the fact that other apps running at 48k were ‘playing nice’, I tried an external USB interface at 48k – that allowed a SR change to 48k in Dorico. I then went back to build-in audio, and that now switches without any problem.

However, playback stops, and SR reverts to 44k1 in Doricon if I remove the USB interface, even though it’s not selected for output. Maybe it’s somehow being relied upon for a clock source. However, other apps run without it.

What are the setting of the built-in sound device if you open the Audio MIDI Setup utility? Maybe you could take a screenshot and post here. Thanks

Morning, Ulf.

Sorry if I’ve not been clear. The setting is 48k. I’ve tried all output options (at 48k with the same result in Dorico. What puzzles me is that other apps, such as Hauptwerk, clearly recognise this setting and run at 48k.

You could try creating an aggregate device that only contains your Built-in Output, and then set Dorico to use that.

I also wonder that the sample rate change does happen with you and I also have few ideas at the moment. Normally Dorico even follows the current settings of the audio device.
What additionally wonders me, in the screenshot I see Built-in Output and Built-in Line Output, but in the Dorico audio engine logs there is only ever the device Built-in Audio, so I don’t even know which of the two Dorico connects to. What does the Line Output have for a setting?
Thanks for clarifying

All outputs showing in audio/midi setup are set to 48k. However, I did notice that the optical digital i/p (not connected) was selected and set to 44k1. I don’t know that this would affect Dorico –it’s clearly not affecting other apps.

As this is a recent change in behaviour, I suspect that this is a small corruption somewhere. I may end up reinstalling the system.

I do have an aggregate input but change this to built-in only and see.
