Dorico 5 - Combined Dynamics is missing a feature in the toolbar related to subito position L/R

I can’t seem to find a solution to this, so I’m posting.

I have noticed that, in Dorico 5, when I choose a dynamic from the Immediate Dynamics panel, then select subito, the subito marking is placed to the right of the dynamic by default (eg. f sub.). The toolbar at the bottom allows me to modify the Subito position (Left/Right). Since I prefer the subito marking to the left of the dynamic, I always select Left (eg. sub. f).

However, when I select a dynamic from the Combined Dynamics panel (eg. mf-p), then choose subito (eg. mf-p sub.), the toolbar now seems to be missing the Subito position L/R setting. In fact, it seems to be missing for all subito combined dynamics that I create.

How can I change the subito position for a combined dynamic?

This seems completely redundant to me. Subito means all at once as opposed to gradually. So-called combined dynamics such as mfp are immediate by definition.

Perhaps you feel the dash in mf-p makes it look too gradual. In that case you can change the “separator shown” property to omit it.

Thanks for your reply Mark. I see your point, but that isn’t how I want to use it. I would like to use subito to immediately separate this combined dynamic from a dynamic shown a few bars before it, which, in this case, happens to be louder. At the moment there is a tendency to perform the transition too gradually, thus the need for the subito. Also I think that placing the subito to the left of the dynamic makes it clear that the beginning of the combined dynamic is subito, and that the end part of the combined dynamic does not need to be so precisely timed.

I see. Not to depricate your feature request, but just thinking pragmatically: Would it achieve the same thing to write “(non dim.)” after the previous loud?

Thanks for the suggestion Mark. I will consider it as a backup plan.

In the meantime, I feel that I am not asking for much in regards to this “feature request”, as the code for changing the subito L/R position in the toolbar already exists and is already implemented; It just currently happens to be available only for Immediate Dynamics for some reason. Can it please be extended to include Combined Dynamics as well?

Instead of clicking the subito button in the dynamics panel for a combined dynamic, you could use the prefix property to enter the text sub.

Thank you John for mentioning the prefix property. I never thought to use it for this particular situation, but that workaround definitely solved the issue for me.

It proves just how much I really appreciate this forum to help me to think out of the box!

Now, is there a way to change the default of “Hide intensity marking” to “off” when a prefix text is entered, and to change the default of “Parenthesized” to “off” when a suffix text is entered?

In addition, could the subito button be changed such that clicking on it activates a macro that merely fills in the prefix or suffix property with the appropriate text? At least that way I wouldn’t be going down a rabbit hole late at night when I am not fully aware of all of my options!

Again, much appreciated!
