Dorico 5 crashes when using NotePerformer

I have installed Dorico 5 and the latest version of NotePerformer 4. I am using the 30 day trial of NP4. However, when I open Dorico and start a score it crashes when I try to save. Then after the crash, NP opens on my desktop. Sometimes I am able to get NP to play, other times I get no playback at all. Please assist.

Note Performer is set as my template, and have the VST directory set with the NP install (64 bit)

Dorico Diagnostics.zip (551.1 KB)
. Still no luck.

Saving, closing the project, and re-opening seems to work for playback but I still get the crash when starting a new score.

There are no crashes in your diagnostics.

What exactly happens when you start a new score?

When I try to click on file to save, the program freezes and I have to force close. That is when I get the splash screen for NotePerformer on my desktop which should have opened with Dorico.

How does Dorico behave without NotePerformer?

I am guessing you know that the NP trial stops working after 30 minutes. If you try to save after that, you will likely have difficulty.

I did not know that, and that may be the culprit. I thought it was just a straight 30-day trial. I thought only the more specialized plug-ins (like BBC Orchestra) were the ones with timed trials like that. Guess I was wrong

I see it is an hour rather than half an hour before the trial cuts out.

Based on what you have experienced already, you might consider the rent-to-own option for NP. For about $11 (or the local equivalent) one can use NP for a month and rent it a month at a time until one has paid the purchase price, at which time on owns the software outright.

I went ahead and bought NP, and so far so good. Apparently, the trial version doesn’t behave with Dorico like it should.

I had no problems with the trial.

What I did notice is that after I opened a score that was wired up to use NP, the first time I did something that produced a sound, NP would open up a splash screen and a dialog with the terms of the trial, on which I had to click the OK button. This NP dialog would usually open up behind Dorico, where I couldn’t see it. If I didn’t bring it to the foreground and click OK, strange things might happen.

The full NP shows a splash screen but not a dialog.
