I am using VSL and I do not hear any dynamics. Does Dorico not recognize expression markings?
Are you using the correct expression maps for your VSL instruments?
(Edit: consult the VSL website… )
I am. Is this a Dorico issue or a VSL issue?
You can check what Dorico is sending by looking at the Dynamics track in the Key Editor…
And if you know whether your instruments respond to Velocity or CC#, check the respective track.
Hi,
You should make sure you read the manual, specifically this part:
Some of the VSL libraries (particularly the VSL “Special Edition” libraries) are initialized in Dorico with the assumption that you have a really really really slow computer that would choke doing anything, and so these have VelXF turned off by default, as per that page, and they expect you to turn on Vel XF if you need it by adding a CC28 value to your tracks in Dorico.
Without doing this, the instruments will not respond to dynamics during a note, but you will suddenly hear the new dynamic with the next note. If you need them to respond to dynamics changes during a note, you have to turn CC28 on by opening up the CC28 lane in Dorico and adding a 127 value with the pencil tool.
This is not a bug with VSL or Dorico, but was a conscious design decision by VSL to avoid overloading the computer if someone was trying to do this on something really ancient like a 15 year old computer system or something.
The newer VSL libraries have higher system requirements, so VSL normally has VelXF turned on all the time for those, it is only turned off for their Special Edition because that’s made to work on very old weak computers.
I just saw your post on the VSL forum, where you provided the additional piece of information that it is Synchron Brass that you are trying to load.
Probably instead of using the auto-loading you are trying to load things manually and are choosing the wrong preset in the player. You should always start with the VSL playback template and its autoloading functions instead of loading things manually yourself because different expression maps are designed to use different VSL presets when it comes to CC’s etc., so there’s a high likelihood of choosing the wrong preset when you try loading things manually instead of using the automatic features.
For instance, all of the libraries have some presets that use CC2 for dynamics and others have presets that use CC1 for dynamics. Some of the VSL expression maps are designed to use CC2 for dynamics and others are designed to use CC1 for dynamics. When you apply the VSL Playback Template to load the VSL libraries automatically, the correct preset gets loaded for each instrument. If you ignore this template and attempt to load things manually, you are very likely to mistakenly try loading a CC1-controlled preset where the expression map is intended for CC2 control, or a CC2-controlled preset where the expression map is intended for CC1 control.
