Dorico 5 Elements has no playback sound

I cannot get any playback in Dorico 5 Elements. I’ve scanned the help threads and nothing works. I’m uploading my diagnostics.zip file to give you a starting point. Thanks in advance.

Hi @Curt_Ebersole , welcome to the forum.

The diagnostics look fine, but please do in Dorico from the menu Edit > Device Setup and in that dialog click on Device Control Panel. In the little window that then pops up, are the output ports actually enabled?

Thanks for the quick response.
Yes, they are selected. See attachment.

Hm, I would have bet a serious amount of money that that what I wrote is the solution…but lucky I did not.
Anyway, please try this then please:

  • Start Dorico anew
  • Create a project from solo piano template
  • Enter some arbitrary notes
  • Go to Play mode and wait until the Playback button becomes green
  • Bring the HALion Sonic editor window to the front
  • Check that in the first slot the S90 Yamaha Grand patch is loaded
  • Click with the mouse on the virtual on-screen keyboard
Do you then see some metering flickering in the top middle of the HALion Sonic window? If you look in the Play mode in the lower zone at the mixer, is there some metering flickering on the most right side, the red Main output channel?

Where do I find the HALion Sonic editor window? It’s not listed under the Window menu.

In Play mode, look at the Track Inspector panel on the left-hand side. In the Routing section, you’ll see a little e button: click that to show the HALion Sonic window.

So I get the “No license found” in the HALion window. I went back, found my installation code, entered it, and although it accepted the code, I do not get any sound playback.
The help desk is only open Monday-Friday. I will try them tomorrow, but if you have any further ideas, please share. Thanks.

What does the Steinberg Activation Manager say? What licenses are listed there and in what state are they (If activated the button to the right says deactivate or if not activated it says activate)?
And even if you reach out to Support tomorrow, most likely they will hand over your case to me anyway

Curt, have you had a trial of the full HALion 7 product installed on your computer? If so, perhaps the issue is that the trial has indeed expired but Dorico doesn’t know it can use HALion Sonic instead. Go to the Play page of Preferences, and set Default HALion plug-in to Use preferred, then set Preferred HALion plug-in to HALion Sonic, and try re-applying the default playback template to your product. Does it work now?
