Very new to Dorico.
When I click on play, all indications are that it’s playing but not a sound comes out.
Also following the First Steps Live video on YouTube, when I choose “apply template” the list that shows up on my screen is completely different from what is shown in the video and I have no idea what to do.
Please and thank you.
Welcome to Dorico.
Yes, that looks very different, because John has a lot of other playback templates on his computer, so don’t compare yours with the one from John.
As a first step I would check if the Audio device is configured to what you have in your computer. How to do this is described here
Can you please show a screenshot of the list of playback templates you are seeing in your installation?
I guess, if you installed Dorico from scratch it should basicylly look like the one in the help (except for Noteperformer, which is a separate product you can buy).
Below the picture in the help you see a list of instruments available to you, depending on the version of Dorico. Are these instruments installed on your computer?
For an easy start I would select the first template “HALion Sonic Selection” and see if that gives you the playback sound for your score. Manipulating instruments so that they sound more perfect can be done later.
Thank you SO MUCH! Turns out switching the ASIO driver fixed everything. I had no idea…
And, given this post already has 30 views, I suppose many others appreciate your answer.
Cheers!
What is wrong when the sound from the program Dorico works in the computer speakers but not in the headphones?"
They might be separate outputs. Check Edit->Device Setup.
If you’re on a Mac you can create a multi output device with both in Audio MIDI Setup.

Thanks!

I am having the same problem as the OP, but the ASIO driver is already showing the correct selection. I have tried all the other trouble-shooting steps I’ve been able to find, but still no sound, either on note input or playback. The troubleshooting video isn’t helping as it’s from some years ago and Halion SE isn’t one of the options I see to install.
Posting screenshots of the playback templates I have installed (I’m not sure whether HALion Sonic 7.1.40 is installed or not - I had to install it manually) and what my screen looks like when I go to playback templates in Dorico.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Can you do Help > Create Diagnostic Report and attach the resulting zip file, @Speaight?
Thank you for your reply - here’s the diagnostic report:
Dorico Diagnostics.zip (1.5 MB)
I’m confused: your illustration seems to be ambivalent about whether HALion Sonic 7.1.40 has been installed. That would leave the question of what (version of the) playback software your copy of Dorico is using.
I would install the (latest) Sonic Player to see if that gives you sound.
Hi @Speaight, HALion Sonic 7.1.40 is installed properly with you, but your problem is, that no output port can be found. Please go in Dorico to Edit > Device Setup and in there click on the Device Control Panel button, a new little window will open. In there make sure that the Output port is activated.
Amazing, thank you so much! It works now (and even better, it’s also much more audible / louder than when it was working previously, but I could barely hear it).
I am having the same trouble as OP. Working on a Windows 11 system with Dorico Pro, and when I click play in the upper left, the cursor follows the music and looks as though it should be playing. I know the instruments are installed, and I am using the computer speaker (no headphones or attached speakers). I’m just at a total loss as to what to do…
Welcome to the forum. Step 1 would be to upload your diagnostics here (do Help>Create Diagnostic Report and upload the resulting zip file from your desktop) so one of the team can help you.
Thanks… uploaded the diagnostics here. ![]()

And now a little patience…
Thanks for the data @jacqueline.bencke .
At first look it is all pretty normal and I would expect sound to come out with you.
What I only see is, that all your faders are pretty much down. What if you go to the play mode and there have the mixer in the lower pane open, when you pull up all the faders, does then maybe sound come out?
Thanks for the reply. I tried your suggestion about the mixers and still no sound. If it’s helpful, when I open up a document on Finale, I can use playback with no problem. So, I think it has to be something in the software settings…
I am having a similar problem - playback works fine using Dorico’s default sounds, but, when I try to use the GP05 template everything is muted. With the Garritan template some instruments are muted and some play. I have followed all the steps in this thread but nothing works. What is the best way to make the Garritan sounds work on Dorico? Thank you
EDIT: I solved the problem by re-installing Garritan on my computer, using these instructions from MakeMusic. Once Garritan was re-installed selecting the finale playback template in Dorico worked as it should.
