Dorico 6 nightmare

I tried upgrading to Dorico 6. Paid for it. Then when I went to Steinberg Download Assistant. It said I needed to upgrade my SDA so I did. I tried and I kept getting this “Connection to the download server failed. Check your internet connection and try again.” Which, of course is bullshit. My internet connection is fine. If I can’t get the DSA to work I can’t upgrade to Dorico 6 which means I have to go through the hassle of getting money back.

I’m getting tired of everything associated with this programme being so bloody complicated.

This obviously doesn’t help you, but I just tried the SDA, and it works fine here. Just to rule out servers being down and the like….

Maybe a team member will chime in about this.

Cheers,

Benji

It’s possible that the SDA itself may need updating, You can download the latest version from Steinberg’s Download page.

Come to that, you can even download Dorico 6 itself from there. But version 6 does also come with additional sample libraries, like the Etude Elements piano, Marching Percussion, etc. And SDA will sort out the licensing more easily.

The SDA does add a layer of complexity, but on the other hand it also helps to manage all the various components that are needed. If you buy any additional Steinberg products, then the benefit increases.

Indeed, I have found that I need to update SDA first as it probably contains the new, required endpoints.

You might want to press shift while clicking on the refresh button in the SDA. This will “force refresh” the licenses.

Hi @Ralph_Fisher, see this page (with direct download links  )

EDIT: the link to the page was missing:

I tried updating the SDA and that’s when the problem arose. I’ve requested a refund of my update to Dorico 6. Every time you add an extra step or procedure you make things more and more complicated, ergo more difficult — needlessly so.

I’m seriously thinking about MuseScore more and more.

This the fourth time I’ve tried that SDA update and I still get that miserable message. I give up!

I’ve experienced this frustration…

Just a thought. Have you done the recent Steinberg Activation Manager refresh? As per…

(I may be wrong, but I believe the SDA talks to the SAM to confirm licence status)

Do you have any VPN or Firewall active?

What do you mean with “Update”? Did you download the latest SDA from the Steinberg Support site?

Try to deinstall the Download Assistant, Activation Manager and Library Manager via Windows Settings (if you are on Windows) or remove the Apps (if you are on Mac).

Then do a fresh install of the SDA, which will automatically install the Activation and Library Manager as well.

@dspreadbury Sorry for asking while you are busy, but I’d appreciate if someone at Steinberg support team could take a look at this issue. One of my friends has the same problem, whenever he launches Steinberg Download Assistant he sees this error message and always ends up with installing everything manually each time Dorico updated.

A connection to the download server could not be established.
Check your internet connection and try again.
Please note that all downloads are also available from the Steinberg web page.

Clicking the refresh button on Steinberg Activation Manager didn’t work. Uninstalling related files in Application folder, Application Support folder in both root and user directry, relaunch Mac, and newly-downloading/reinstalling Steinberg Download Assistant, Steinberg Activation Manager and Steinberg Library Manager didn’t solve it on macOS 14.2.1 environment. Please let me know, thank you very much in advance.

Are you sure you have the latest Download Assistant installed?

There has been an update several weeks ago due to expired certificates.

Thanks for the support. Yes we’ve just dowloaded the SDA from the following link, it’s the latest version “Steinberg_Download_Assistant_1.39.3_Installer_mac.dmg“.

There are some logs created in the user-level application data folder, in Steinberg/Download Assistant. Please zip that folder up and send it to me, and I can ask my colleagues with expertise in SDA if they can provide any further advice.

Just for information, this isn’t correct - SDA doesn’t get licence information from SAM.

@dspreadbury Thank you! I got the “Download Assistant” folder from the user’s following location.

/Users/(UserName)/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/

Please let me know if you find something, thank you.

Download Assistant.zip (1.0 KB)

Thanks @benwiggy , this helped for me, too!

Unfortunately there’s essentially nothing in there. Can you ask your friend for some details about their system configuration?

Same issue for me on Windows 11, on a system that had not been used for many months. Downloaded the version of SDA on the link @JuergenP posted above which solved the problem.

Thanks, it’s solved just now. I found he is using “McAfee LiveSafe - Internet Security.app”, when he disabled McAfee’s realtime scan and firewall, SDA started to work as expected, without any error. (Just turning macOS’s firewall off didn’t work, we needed to do it on McAfee. ) Thank you very much for your kind support!
