Dorico 6 Playback Issues – No Sound on Startup

Hello,

I’m having a recurring issue with Dorico 6 where no sound is played at all when I start the program. In order to get any audio output, I have to go through a frustrating process: switching the ASIO driver back and forth several times, changing the playback template from NotePerformer to HALion and back again (often repeatedly) until eventually, and somewhat randomly, the sound starts working.

This entire procedure takes around 15 minutes every time I launch Dorico, even after a system reboot. It’s making it very difficult to work productively.

I am using Windows 11 Pro, the latest Dorico 6 Version and an RME Babyface Pro FS with the latest Driver.

Is there any known fix or workaround for this issue?

Thank you in advance!

Best regards

Having the same issues. I have gone back to Dorico 5

I’ve sent private messages to both, Ruediger and Jason.

Same problem here. Not only are certain sound outputs missing (sound blaster gc7 speakers for instance) but no sound during playback at all, no matter which output of the available ones is selected. newest 6.0.22 version and had issues right since having updated to 6.0 Very frustrating things are not tested well enough any longer.

Hi @abeschorner , sorry to hear about that.

Would you please create a diagnostic report (Help > Create Diagnostic Report) after doing the following: Create a new project from solo piano template and enter a handful of notes.
Thanks

I was having the same issue today. Switched back and forth from the Audient ASIO driver to the generic ASIO driver to the Steinberg ASIO driver finally back to Audient. That worked, but it’s definitely bugged.

Hi @wayne.allen.jones , welcome to the forum.
That’s really a bit weird in your case. Here some extract from the logging:

2025-07-17 09:55:17 : enumerateCurrentOutputIds: 4
2025-07-17 09:55:17 : =>Analogue 1
2025-07-17 09:55:17 : =>Analogue 2
2025-07-17 09:55:17 : =>Analogue 3
2025-07-17 09:55:17 : =>Analogue 4
2025-07-17 09:55:17 : getCurrentDevice: Audient USB Audio ASIO Driver (samplerate 44100.000000) (blockSize 512)
2025-07-17 09:55:17 : (latency (in 578) (out 639))
2025-07-17 09:55:17 : addMapping O to Out (id 5)
2025-07-17 09:55:17 : => port UR22C Mix L (id 22)
2025-07-17 09:55:17 : => port UR22C Mix R (id 23)

The 4 analogue outputs of the Audient are found , but then suddenly the driver connects to the ports of the UR22C. I don’t know how this could happen. But you said you have it now working properly. Let’s hope it stays like that and please report back should you run into trouble again.

Thanks for the info, and the help. I’m extremely new to the Steinberg universe of apps (Dorico and Cubase 14 Elements, respectively) after using Ableton Live since 2008.

I added Dorico and then Cubase because I want to work directly with staff notation rather than a piano roll.

Sorry to hear, @pifrei

I’ve sent you a private message via this board, please check.

I’m having the same issue, too. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I created the solo piano piece and diagnostics, if that is any help.

Thanks!

Hi @stephanie.morse , welcome to the forum.
From what I can see in the logs, somehow the RealtekASIO audio driver is playing stupid. Interestingly, the RealtekASIO driver is the only one that gets detected, although normally Dorico installs the Steinberg Built-in ASIO driver along with it. Could you please run the Dorico installer again and in there choose the Repair option. If you then start Dorico again and go to Edit > Device Setup in the ASIO driver dropdown box also the Steinberg Built-in ASIO driver should be listed. If you choose that one instead, does then audio come out?

That did it! I’m running it on a company-owned computer, so the installation process had a few fits and starts. Thank you so much!
