Dorico 6 new proofreading feature hilighted that I might have been using string section divisi in a wrong way.
Sometimes when material differs alot I am creating a divisi on a separate staff.
But often one requires just a few notes in divisi and creating a div. staff (which btw. wastes space in galley view for an entire flow) is not a good way. I have created div. playback technique and sometimes I state on parts that if no “non div.” is present then multiple notes are divisi.
New proofreading hilights load of “multiple notes require same string”, “stretch too wide”, “thumb required” etc. errors.
Please enlighten me about the correct way of creating occasional single-staff string section divisi.
The most silly example is Cb, we have usually some 5-string and some 4-string models present in orchestras. It would be quite silly to create a div. staff for Cb. octave divisi for places where 5-string models are octave below 4-string Cb. I am probably missing something, this is my usual state.
I think your approach is not bad per se. At the same time, Dorico’s new feature should be told to interpret the “div.” playing technique as a trigger to ignore the errors you mentioned.
A workaround may be to use two upstem (or two downstem, at your choice) voices, set their voice column to 0 and adjust the few stems that may result as being too short. At this point, Dorico should read each voice separately and those errors should go away. Give it a try.
Think of proofreading as a suggestion, or a warning of a possible problem. There may be valid reasons for doing things that it flags.
Ideally, Dorico would recognise a ‘div.’ text or PT and act accordingly.
The trouble is of course that there is no default div. playing technique, so recognising all of the random ones users have created is non-trivial.
Dorico does look for text that says “div”, but playing techniques are less straightforward, as Daniel says.
YES, thanks!
That is it. I better use div. as text and that indeed does remove those warnings.
