Hi – I noticed that former Finale users who buy the Dorico crossgrade now will automatically receive Dorico 6 – this makes me feel penalized a bit for switching over as early as I did. Any chance of giving those of us who bought the crossgrade earlier a free upgrade to Dorico 6? Thanks!
Perhaps check out this thread from earlier this afternoon:
You have had up to 8 months’ use out of it – and time is money! And $430 off the list price, so you’re not doing too badly.
Apologies for not catching the earlier post. While I understand the comments, my point remains – the Finale users who resisted the crossgrade until now are getting an updated version of Dorico that costs those of us who moved over earlier $99 that the latecomers don’t have to pay to stay current with the program. I don’t think it’s a good look, but I understand that Steinberg doesn’t really have to care about that.
Makemusic gave a significant Black Friday discount on the crossgrade last November - now that actually made me feel cheated because I bought it early. But that’s just how things go. I’ve had 8 months of Dorico use which means I’ve been able to learn and adapt to Dorico in that time, so I don’t see this as a waste of money. I certainly understand Steinberg’s POV on this.
I’m not very sympathetic to this. It’s been announced for a long time that version 6 would be appearing this year.
Obviously updates are going to happen, and people who cross grade later are going to get those for free. I can’t see why you would have any problem with that.
Surely you don’t expect to get the update for free after getting Dorico 5 for a very low price? It seems you actually do! I’m quite frankly amazed.
You didn’t switch over early. Anyone with any sense started using Dorico (whenever possible) years ago.
The recent newcomers are late arrivals.
@Tristis Do you really think this is appropriate towards an orphaned Finale user?
I’ve generally felt welcomed and helped on this forum, and I will of course pay for the upgrade in order to have the most current version of the software – BUT the fact remains that if I’d waited 7 1/2 months to do the crossgrade, I would have gotten the latest version for free. Yes, perhaps I should have done my research and held on for the introduction of Dorico 6, but the issue of crossgrading was presented to Finale users with EXTREME urgency. Perhaps this is yet ANOTHER reason for “orphaned Finale users” to be very, VERY angry with MakeMusic …
There’s truth in that, I do remember they conveyed a sense of urgency.
Only in that there was no indication given of how long the special crossgrade price would last, I think.
Also, IIRC, the activation server was only going to run for the next year. It was handled sloppily, but that’s on MM, not Steinberg.
I absolutely understand your anger. And I am sorry if the term “orphaned” has offended you - English is not my first language and this was the way to put it shortly that came to my mind. I sincerely didn’t mean to offend you - were you? If so, again I’m sorry and I will try to find a more neutral term.
Anyway, my post was intended to be directed at Tristis, whose reply I felt to be unnecessarily rude.
But you wouldn’t have had the use of Dorico for that 7.5 months. That’s what you got for your $149. You can keep using v5, but new features cost money. And, let’s face it, there’s more features in this update than in a decade of Finale paid upgrades.
I can feel some sympathy with Finale users who updated earlier this year, and just missed out on the grace period; but anyone could have bought Dorico less than a year before a new version.
There was never a good time to make the decision; though I’ll agree they’ve handled it badly.
‘an orphaned Finale user’
You put it well. There’s was nothing wrong with what you wrote.
I’m usually being more mischievous than rude.
No offense taken AT ALL, klavierpunk! “Orphaned” is an absolutely apt term for how I (and many others) felt when the announcement about the end of Finale came.
If you don’t mind waiting, you can play the upgrade game that some people do. Buy the upgrade for 6 now (or when/if there’s a sale), but don’t activate it until 7 is released. Since 7 will have just been released, you’ll be activating 6 within the grace period getting you 7 for free. Users who upgrade from 5 to 7 will pay $200 (assuming no change in pricing). Of course, this means you’ll need to keep using 5 until 7 comes out. Whether or not sitting on a license is worth it is a personal determination.
