Dorico 6

It’s been two years since Dorico 5’s release. And then there were mentions of Dorico 6 releasing late 2024 by Dorico team, which never happened. But hoping it is a matter of days or weeks for the next version of Dorico to release with all new shiny features

I seem to recall Daniel mentioning early 2025. I am checking in daily with the feeling of immanence too.

I also suspect the delay may be caused by the team wanting to add extra features which may help the Finale refugees…

I’m in the middle of a massive project so I really hope they don’t release an update anytime soon!

Fingers crossed for individual selection on notes in tie chains…!

Won’t happen. Use the caret… :+1:

That’s what I do. But don’t be so sure — some time ago, Daniel Spreadbury stated that this is something that will be added in the future. Selecting individual notes will be like selecting individual grouped elements (blue selection vs. orange

Ah, fair enough, I hadn’t seen that!

Updates are not automatic, so you don’t have to do them immediately.
What’s more, I think it’s possible to host two different versions of Dorico on your computer at the same time, which gives you the freedom to finish your work while testing D6.

I know, but I’ll want to.

But patience is the mother of all virtues, as they say in France…

What’s more, I think it’s always a good idea to wait a little while after the release of a new version so as not to “essuyer les plâtres” (another French expression).

Dorico does have a pretty good track record of continuity and stability between versions. Apart from 4.1 when Lyrics moved to Paragraph Styles, when some lyrics could take up a bit more vertical space, which could sometimes affect very tightly packed scores.

I’ve certainly upgraded to take advantage of a new feature in a project I’m already working with. As long as I’ve got the same number of pages at the end, it’s probably fine. :flushed:

Yes, I have feelings of hope every Wednesday….

You could be right about the Finale functionality. Daniel has also explained that the team is also working on Cubase score functionality (and perhaps other things too) and so it’s going to take longer than usual to deliver a significant amount of new functionality.

What I always dread about major updates is seeing some massive fancy new feature introduced that nobody asked for, that has clearly taken a huge chunk of the developers’ time, and that you just know you’ll never use. It’s that sinking feeling.
Maybe I’m just scarred from InDesign updates.

Yes, happens all the time. But deep down I’m always sure that somebody will need those features.
Just look at some major things Dorico can do that you or I may never have used. For me it’s Play Mode. Never use it, but I see here that some folks are quite happy with how things are developoing there

Have you seen the Feature Request threads…? I guarantee you that somebody has asked for it.

Dorico is used by people making lead sheets, audio mock-ups, jazz arrangements, music theatre, church music, opera, early music, film scores, avant garde, teachers, etc, etc, – and the team can’t afford to ignore or exclude any one.

Yes, there are features that I will never use. But if having them means that more people are using and investing in Dorico, then that’s a good thing. My pet choices may not have been top billing in every release, but there’s always been something I can use.

I don’t recall 2024 ever being mentioned. In August 2024 Daniel said, “Dorico 6 is not imminent. We are not anywhere near the grace period.” In January 2025 he said, “Work is well underway on the next major version of Dorico, which will be released this year.” So definitely a 2025 release.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they are aiming for June 1 or thereabouts as that’s great timing for the educational market. Any schools with funds left over from the 2024-25 school year can still use them for purchases, and there’s plenty of time to budget for 2025-26 when the fiscal calendar changes on July 1.

Funny, that’s precisely the level of detail I apply to all of my final editing.

What I am really looking forward to is support for Cantai integration. Should be hopefully coming now as discussed on Cantai Discord Server.

Not sure how that would work, since Dorico is more like a sequencer in terms of how notes are grouped, but that would be very helpful, having come from using Finale since the early 1990’s where that was very much a paradigm (although in the end I did need a .lua script to be able to finely tune the selection if needed).

Hi, I am pasting the exact words of mr. Spreadbury in a similar comment of mine sometime ago: "We plan to make tied notes behave a bit like grouped dynamics in Write mode: the notehead you actively click on will show up orange, while the others will show up in the blue linked selection colour. You would then be able to, for example, create something at the position of the first orange notehead, rather than at the beginning of the entire note, and it would also potentially be possible for copying and pasting to truncate that note at the first and last selected noteheads in the chain.

This requires some thoroughgoing changes to the way selections work in Dorico, so it’s not something you should expect imminently, but we are absolutely alive to these issues"
