Dorico - add pickup bar with automatic correct ending bar value?

Hi,

Dorico Pro 5.1.60 user here. I’ve started using Dorico in my teaching, and trying to learn the various functions after using Sibelius for 20 years.

Could anyone please tell me how I add a pickup bar, and at the same time get the correct value in the last/ending bar? Or, as a stop-gap solution, create a new pickup bar as the ending bar - but be able to hide the time signature put before the bar (ie. barline). In other words, create a pickup bar, without being forced to see the time signature symbol.

I can add the pickup bar, but in Sibelius I’m used to that it automatically adjust the last bar, to correspond with the pickup bar. I can also hide/show any item in the score I want to, like individual notes, rests, meter symbols etc. Neither these things seem to be possible in Dorico, but maybe I’m missing something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

There are many ways to do these things, but you can’t do it in one operation.

The simplest route is select the final barline and just add a new time signature (eg. shift-m 3/4), then hide it in the properties panel.

Or active Insert mode, set it to the Global Adjustment of Current Bar scope, then delete notes/rests from the last bar that equal the duration you want to remove.

I have also found that Dorico is smart:
if you select the rest before your last note of the piece, then via popover shift-b enter “final”, finish with enter the final bar-line will be corrected.

Thanks for your reply.
How do I hide it in the properties panel? I went through all the options, and couldn’t find anything that seemed relevant?

(Btw. I wish the properties panel was more easy to navigate, like in Sibelius. )

Thanks.

Property Panel cmd-8
on Windows ctrl-8

Thats the bottom panel.
Following a logical structure,
cmd(ctrl)-7 closes / opens the left panel
cmd(ctrl)-9 closes / opens the right panel
and so on.
cmd(ctrl)-0 closes all panels

Thanks!

Btw., thanks for all the replies, I will try out all the different solutions.

You are welcome, Gear.
Things are different in Dorico, but they all have a certain appeal which makes using them fun.
You can set up short-keys to Properties you like to use more often.
Still, there is a secret rule in Dorico: if you go to the property panel often, change your global settings instead.

If you select the time signature, the bottom panel will show its properties…

(Be aware that the properties shown in the bottom panel are very specific to whatever is selected. So if you select a time signature and a note, then the panel will be empty, because there are no properties relevant to both notes and time signatures)
